I have a bad tranny in my 99 Ranger 3.0 4x4 auto with 180,000 miles. It started with the o/d light blinking and a code that I can't remember the number of but said that I was having an issue with my converter slipping or not engaging. It was very consistant in how it acted. It took a bit of time to get the light to start and when it did come on my shifting from 1-2/2-1 was very harsh. This was the only problem that came up.I could shut the truck off which would clear the light and the shifting would be fine until the light came back on which was approximately 3-5 miles at 50 mph.

Yesterday on my way home from work it gave me a miss kind of feeling with the revs climbing high,it did this twice. After the second miss I lost all tranny function,no nothing.

I really enjoy the info that is presented here and I'm not afraid to get my hands dirty.I would like to rebuild it if it would make sense money wise.I just have never done an automatic transmission before. What do you think?Ron

Rebuilding it yourself makes a LOT of sense money wise. YOU can build it as well as most shops, maybe better, and take the time to do some upgrades and things they won't. The 5R55E is an offshoot of the A4LD, and they are VERY similar inside, that said if you read the A4LD Rebuild Diary you will have in essence seen a 5R rebuild too. Then read Project Frankentranny for a look side by side at the A4LD and 5R55, which will help you understand the differences.

Thanks Glasier,What do recommend for rebuild kits.Up hear NAPA and Carquest are the major auto supply stores.I see alot of stuff online but I have come to learn that not all rebuild kits are created equal!

I have also looked for torque converters and find little info on them.
