Recently since it became cold my 95 EB has been acting funny. At first it just took a few seconds to engage into D or R. Recently it has become longer time to engage. Now, reverse seems to work OK but when I put it in drive it does not seem to engage unless I rev really high. It almost feels as if the tires in the back are spinning as if it was the transfer case slipping, but reverse works fine so I do not know if this would be accurate. Not sure if anyone can help, but anything would be appreciated. Josh

When was the trans serviced last?
Well, I would first check fluid levels, then drop the pan, see what condition the filter is in. I had engagement problems and it turned out to be a loose filter. Could be lots of other things, but here is a start.

I checked the fluid and it is definitely black and smelling burnt. It will rev high and then seem to kick into gear but will slip and chatter as it continues to shift through all the gears. I was told that this could be the clutch plates, or also could be the transfer case chain. Not sure as I am not too great with transmissions. It is tough to do much as it is 25 outside, but if there is anything simple it may be I am willing to try.

generally, when transmission fluid is brown or black, it's caused by 2 things:
either it's overheating, and the ATF is burning.
Or, it's due to too much slippage of the clutchpacks, causing the worn clutch material to mix in with the ATF.

it is possible for the overheating to cause excessive slippage.

first thing you could try, is to drop the pan and replace the filter and fluid.

I jumped in the truck today to take it and get the fluid and filter changed and it is worse. Today it will not engage at all, nothing changes at all when putting in gear, neutral, or reverse. Yesterday it would somewhat engage when I revved the engine but today nothing at all so I can't even get it down to the shop to have it checked out. Any ideas? Anyone know a good place in Scranton Willkesbarre area of PA? Any help would be appreciated!

Josh

Hey josh check your transfer case shift motor it may be sticking in the neutral position. I just pretty much had the same thing happen, seems like it's in neutral in : DNR21 right?? Take the shift motor off and see if you can shift the little bar and see if that works.... Just my $.02 ;) ;)

Thanks for the idea, did it also seem to only half way engage at times? This is how it started for me. The fact that the fluid was burnt also has my head spinning, but I will def. check this out. Thanks

The more I think about it though the more this seems unlikely that it is the transfer case motor...it would have remained OK unless I had recently used my 4wd, which I havent, and even afterwords it worked fine.

Forgot to give an update....tranny went...1200 later I have a new to me tranny and running fantastic
