So I have a 97 XLT, with a SOHC 6. I have been looking for a while and there are a few options out there in terms of cat-back kits. I hear Gibson makes a nice product, but what do you guys think?? I have roughly $300 to make this happen, well thats how much id be willing to spend, but what can anyone tell me about what the overall best system is?? my current setup is completely stock, so i want to make the easy intake and exhaust mods beofre anything else.

Thanks guys,

Colin.

The search option is a great thing on this site. Your question has been discussed many times and can be found easily in the search engine.

To answer your question; many people seem to be happy with the Flowmaster 40series muffler on their V6 Explorers. If you have room, run 2.5" piping, but if you don't, then 2.25" will work just as well. Gibson makes good products, but it's all personal preference. Good luck

Pick the muffler of your choice and have your local muffler shop make custom 2 1/2" pipes.

Good luck .....

The Flowmaster SUV 50 series mufflers are a common mod on this site. That's how I discovered them. Definitely a do search and you'll find oodles of threads on the subject.

i have 2.5" piping and flowmaster 40 series, its loud but it sounds good and added some power and cost $215 and you can get a intake for $50, both of those add a nice amount and sound awesome together

i have a morgan-tec muffler and custom k&N intake.. http://www.morgan-tec.com/s_s__muffler.htm the muffler sounds great on my 4.0 ohv and its pretty loud outside but not very noticable inside untill 4.5-5k rpms. i noticed a increase in power. not alot but it was noticeable. im very happy with it.

Assuming you want to install this yourself, I don't think there are a lot of true bolt up catbacks for the SOHC. Gibson and Dynomax are two I can think of. I'd like to know if there are others as well.

The dual inlet muffler stock set-up requires a custom intallation of a 'y' pipe in which case you can choose your own muffler and have a shop fab up the rest of the piping...I think most have gone this route in which case you'll have a lot of different muffler options.
