hey i scrapped into a tree backing out from someones house on my front bumper. i have a '00 EB w/ the red/tan color scheme. it seems to be down to plastic on the one scrape and it looks pretty deep, its on my front bumper where the tan painted part of the bumper is in the corner... any ideas besides getting it repainted, would touchup paint work or could it be too big... thanx for all help

If you can feel the scratch with your fingernail, repainting is the only solution. Without seeing the scratch, I will say generally a scratch can be fixed with touch-up paint if your patient and do things right. Otherwise, take it to a good shop for painting.

For more info on the touch-up route, check out

Run a search on chip and scratch repair, and you should get a good idea if you want to give it a try or not.

id have to disagree with that... i have lots of scratches that i can feel but its just clearcoat deep and you dont always have to repaint the whole thing if its just the clearcote... you can either buff out the scratches or get your clearcoat serviced.

yeah but u can see the black plastic underneath... like i said its pretty deep... secondly how much would it cost to get painted and where should i get it done, the ford stealer by my house stinks, when i had a repair done it was 4x the estimate i had at another shop

If deeply scratched in bumper, I would fill with a plastic resin, sand smooth and paint with touch-up paint.

But if you are having it done by shop, get ready to write big check.

By getting your clear coat serviced, you must mean repainting! Clear coat is paint; it just doesn't contain a pigment. The only way to remove scratches or swirls is to level the surrounding paint to the depth of the scratch. You are removing paint/clear coat when you do this. If the scratch is "clear coat deep" and you buff down to that level, you are headed for clear coat failure. Especially with Ford and most domestic make paint jobs.

its a lot cheaper to get a new clearcoat then getting your car "repainted"

thanx for all the help but i think im just gonna leave it the way it is, i did it a while ago and it hasnt chipped at all even after washing the car several times and waxing it, and since its on plastic it wont rust... thanx for all the help though

Clear coat IS paint !!
And clear is vastly more costly than the base color.

so your telling me that to get just a new clear coat will cost more money than to get the whole pannel or truck re (color) painted (and obviously re clearcoted as well)??

You can't exactly get the clearcoat serviced. It would cost way more than just getting the panel repainted because the body shop guy has to sand the 0.3 mil of clearcoat down and it takes a lot of time and patience to do. And if you do that, you'd have to do the whole panel so it's a more economical way to just get some touchup and repair the area or repaint the panel. If you have time and patience, you can achieve a perfect result.

Yeah what 96... said !
What I am saying is say you spend $1,000.00 ( to pull a number out of a hat ) on the clear the color will only cost another $100.00
( I just work in the shop I don't deal with prices )

In order for the paint to stick to the vehicle you have to scratch it with atleast 320 grit sand paper , nine times out of ten you are gonna go into the color in more than a few locations. I have been doing this for over ten years and the only time we have just reapplied clear is when there was an error in the clear application. Never on an pre-existing paint job.

hey monmix is there any way u could get prices on how much that might cost it would be very helpful, if its over a couple hundred dollars i prob wont get it done

I don't write the estamates. Either way I would have to see it first. It might need to be repaired before it gets painted.
