I got stock wheels for my 97 Explorer. Just put brand new tires so I dont want aftermarket rims, but I do want them black. How can I do it my self. Anyone got steps on what to do...sanding?? powdercoating??? spray painting??? thanks
Many have just used spray paint. They also make a spray paint just for wheels. I think Duplicolor makes it. I guess it is just more durable. Just be sure to prep good, use several coats, and then clear coat and it should hold up. If you search around you should find some threads about it.
I used the wheel paint found at most auto part stores. It has held up well. The only issue I had was when I got new tires put on. A little of the paint started coming off around the bead where the tire slid a crossed it while mounting/dismounting. Other then that it has been about a year and a half and still look good. It is all in the prep work before painting that will get the results. I also used a little roofing flashing to stick in the bead to keep the over spray off the tires. It is a lot easier then trying to tape it all off.
