No Heat/new thermostat, out of ideas NEED HELP!!!!
Hello, I have a 96 Ford Explorer, 6 cyl. Last month my husband said that my antifreeze was low, so he flushed out the radiator and put all new in. I got into the car and drove to get groceries and no heat! Before he did the flush I had HEAT all the time, I have owned the vehicle since it was new. The next day it started to blow warm air and it by the next day all was back to normal. He said it was an air block and worked its way out. Monday of last week it did it again, no heat, and this time the outside temp was 3 above 0. Needless to say, it was a cold drive to work!!! My husband said that it was probably the themostat and today replaced it. Well, I still do not have any heat. He also said that he has been smelling antifreeze around the car for the last few months, but I cannot smell anything, and do not notice any leaks. He is at his wits end. He is a trailer truck mechanic and welcomes any and all ideas as it is driving him crazy! Since i posted this last week on another site, this is what we have done. I made an appointment with my local reputable mechanic. (not a dealer) he said that it was the temp control valve on top of the engine. It was leaking, so he replaced it and refilled the system, this was on Thursday. I had sporadic heat but not like previous. Mechanic said it was probably a bad new themostat and told me to go to a real auto parts store to buy another themostat. I went to Napa and got a new one. On Friday it finally gave me heat late in the afternoon, I had been out on sales calls all day. Saturday No Heat. Today, Sunday, my hubby installed the new thermostat and we ran the system to bleed off the air bubbles. I still do not have heat. HELP 911, I am running out of money trying to fix this thing, I LOVE my red explorer and do not want to have to buy a new one, I own my own business and cannot afford a car payment. Thx in advance.
