Possibly radius arm bushings. When they go bad, you hear a knock under the floorboards on braking or on bumps. Very common item to wear out in Gen 1 Explorers.

second the radius arm bushings. crawl under and check. i knew mine were really bad cause i could just spin them.

i third this mine does it too and i know its the radius arm bushings

I have this problem too at times, but it's not a knock. It's not when the weight is transferred when braking starts, it's almost like once the brakes heat up, i hear a pop type sound and feel a little feedback in the brake pedal at times before the vehicle comes to a complete stop.
Radius Arm bushings are new. Ball joints are good.
My first guess was calipers or slide pins on the calipers, not working right.
Any other ideas?
