Brand new 17 Explorer shakes so bad makes us sick,

So dealer just called. They said a plastic bag and was on the exhaust causing the smell and it was catching the wind and vibrating the truck. I was under the truck last night. I literally shook the exhaust from the turbo back to see if something was loose. Checked the suspension. There was no plastic bag there...

Oh. And they didn't test drive the truck before bringing it in and didn't even balance the wheels.

I didn't think dealer explantions could get any worse than that.

Ask for the plastic bag when you pick it up.

Did they drive it after removing the bag?

If they truly did find a bag that was causing the issue, why would they balance the wheels?

Also, before you sign that the work is complete, take it for a test drive(with service person if possible) to verify it's gone.

A plastic bag shaking the car.. what kind of BS line is that and they expect someone to believe that?

He said they DIDN'T even balance the wheels

Right. If the dealer truly believes they found a plastic bag which did indeed cause the issues, there would be no reason to balance the wheels. That's what I meant.

the shaking is normal, all Explorers shake like crazy, its just the character of the vehicle, you will get used to it, mine shakes so bad my head hits the window repeatedly every time I drive over 10mph so I taped a pillow to my head, you must have gotten lucky with yours. The smell is normal also, mine fills with smoke so much that I drive with the hatch open. Oh wait that never happened, theres no shop online here so I have no idea what people reading this will do for you, I would call the dealer and make an appointment, obviously they overlooked something.:snicker:o_O

So I called out the service manager on the plastic bag theory, catching wind and vibrating the car.

The tech said, I found some plastic from a bag on the exhaust, I didn't find a bag. So the service rep that called me was hoping I would say ' great, thanks for fixing it'. Unreal. He made up some explanation.

That plastic bad remnants on the exhaust could explain the smell for sure.

The tech said a tire may have a flat spot, but it wasn't sitting very long being a 2017.

I then asked again, please break the beads and rebalance. Then I will come there and test drive it.

No offer for a loaner or rental car yet either. I asked and that was blown off. The 2004 Ford Taurus station car (beige lol) I am driving is smoother than the explorer at this point.

The tech did admit he has been in a few explorers that would make you dizzy and your ears feel pressurized and those had a sealing problem on the sunroof or rear hatch.

I guess we will see tomorrow.

Really annoying when you have to be an a-hole and call the service manager for them to just rebalance the tires and see if it goes away.

Either way I guess I need to take it back tomorrow and if it still does it go to another dealer.

Yeah. I get what you are saying. I even offered to go to the local Mavis and have them check the balance on each one which would be much cheaper than a tow...

We will see tomorrow. I hope they find it.

Hello 17sportny,

Let’s get this escalated for you. Please, PM me with your VIN, dealer, mileage, full name, and best daytime number. I’ll loop in the customer service manager for your area.

Deysha

17sportny, I get that you're angry. But sugar goes a lot further than salt when dealing with people.

I bought a new 17 Sport off the lot and had zero problems with it, and that was two months ago. I had a slight bit of "burn-off" smell, but that subsided after a couple days of driving. No shimmy or vibration, but it's true that you'll get weird driving characteristics for the first several miles of driving on brand new tires.

Agreed. I appreciate the feedback. The car we test drove was amazing. Thats why we chose to stay with Ford.

how about lets keep freak outs to a minimum and quote what you would like me to read, I don't have as much free time as you I guess, thanks

Hi Deysha,

I appreciate the response. I will escalate this after giving them the opportunity to balance the tires and let us test drive it.

Even though this hasn't been as accommodating as we would like, the salespeople were still very nice and the nice tech I spoke to and told me the truth (not some spin) made us feel more comfortable.

Had you taken the time to read the posts (and I quoted for all but one of my posts), you could have saved the time to write your first post in this thread. The OP was already "chastised" for his freak out, and most of us talked him off the ledge.o_O

And you would have read that he brought it to the dealer.

Sorry to the OP for derailing this thread, I'll keep future posts on topic.

I smell somthing too...buyers remorse!

Exactly...he's either a troll, or has a huge case of buyer's remorse going from an F-150 to an Explorer. But with some of the ridiculous assertions I have read above, I'm definitely leaning toward Troll!

Or. Just crazy talk here. Something is actually wrong with the vehicle and I am being screwed around with by the typical dealer nonsense? They blamed the vibrations on a plastic bag catching wind under the car and throwing it off. Anyway. Thank you to the helpful people.

Welcome to the Forum 17sportny.
The first thing I would personally suspect with a vibration like that is a bad wheel balance. It could also be a bad tire. The best thing to do is to have the dealer check it out right away. As for the "bad smell", it could be something burning off although I've never experienced that with my current MKT nor my 2011 Explorer Ltd. There is a long thread about exhaust smell but hopefully that isn't it. I'm picking up my new Platinum on Monday and I'll see if it has any of those issues.

I believe the Lane Keeping Feature can cause the steering wheel to vibrate but I doubt that the vibration would be transmitted throughout the vehicle. Have the dealer check it out and good luck.

Peter

Explorer Sport never had the Lane Keep System option

I don't think rebalancing will fix flat spots, Mercedes never get flat spots!!. Why are we getting a play by play of what the dealer is doing, when I get my car worked on I don't come on a forum to tell about an oil change they forgot to tighten a drain plug and now my driveway has an oil stain on it. If the dealer cant solve it, escalate it to the Manager then call Ford directly since its under warranty, I would understand if you don't want to bring it to a dealer since you did not want to pay out of your pocket and are asking for help on here to resolve your issue.
Go to the dealers Google or Yelp review page and please copy and paste your first post there, you will get better help there from the dealer if you need to vent.
