I was talking with a guy about breather filters today (apparently a filter after the PCV valve that filters out what gets through). I have to admit that I'd never heard of it before. Does a 92 X have one? If so, where would it be? Thanks.

yes.... it is the tube that connects the crankcase to the air intake... it is also illegal to put on one of those breathers per emissions laws.... but they will add a few ponies.......

Jim

Is that a inline filter?Where would you buy something like that at?

No it is not an inline filter. I connects to the valvecover and it looks like a mini cone filter. They are called Valve cover breathers I believe. K&N makes them, just go to there site or to your local parts store. I have had them on all my vehicles as in North Dakota there is no emissions req. In Delaware I just put back on the O.E. equipment

thanks

Thanks kandtholman

Sorry I am dumb but where exactly are we talking? I asociate breathers withe the diffs, tcase, trans but where are you takling about?

Thanks

kandtholman, can you post a picture? i think i know what you're talking about, but i'm not sure.

how does it add hp? do you lose any torque?

Here is the link.

They do add a few ponies. Nothing noticeable but its more for the total power brag rights. Every little bit helps. Also keep in mind that any mod you add is usually spread across the power band so you will not feel a difference unlesss it gives 15 or more horses.

I have one of the breather filters and was wondering how exactly those breather filters increase power? Thanks.

By not venting the dirty crank case gases back into the intake (but out to the atmosphere), you are allowing more clean air into the engine, there by gaining some power.

The PCV recycles extra gasses not burned off. Well with your setup currently the gasses go back into the air intake, they are also hot so that does not help for cold air in the intake. The breathers keep the gasses from getting recycled, they just go into the air and this also keeps dirt and such from getting into the valve cover. The whole system is only like $20 or so and replaced the tube from your valve cover and intake tube.

so you take out the pcv valve and put the filter in it's place. then what about the hose that the pcv valve is on? do you just plug it?

ok the hose that runs into the intake tube that runs across the engine right? Take the hose out of the tube and add a filter? Why do you even need a filter and if so why not a cheap fuel filter? if the hose is just for expelling air back into the tube why not just pull the tube off cover the inlet hole to the intake tube with tape and there you go?????

What do you mean valve? the hose referred to as a valve? please help me see this.

Here are some pics that i just took of my MAC intake and the breather filter that i needed to install. There are two things that are attached to the intake pipe. One i think is the air temp sensor. That fits fine into the grommet that MAC includes. The second attachment is a pipe that goes directly to the oil fill tube. from many postings on this board, i found out that this tube is part of the vaccuum system for emissions. I had this tube taped off for a few days... aw crap. once i found out it was essential, i found a breather filter for it. hope the pics help. if the pics are pretty crappy, just let me know and ill try and get better ones up. According to MAC, the induction kit that i have on my X is CARB legal, but as stated in earlier posts, i duno if the breather filter is CARB legal. but ya think its the same thing right?!? hooked up to the intake tube or with a filter, its all filtered air... whatever.

I really don't think that's CARB legal. I'd check w/ your local laws, and w/ MAC too. You've changed the entire set up. You're now venting dirty (poluted) gasses into the atmosphere rather than reburning them in your engine. That's what a PCV (positive crankcase ventilation) valve does. It's a one way valve that allows gases to escape, but not fresh air to enter. Then the hose directs those gasses back to the intake to be reburned. By venting to the atmosphere you are in effect, polluting it. That is bad, that is not carb legal. That's why they've had PCV valves on cars since the 70's. Breathers have been gone for 30+ years. They made them for old cars that it was still legal on. You can still put them on new cars, they just won't pass inspection. What they're supposed to do is allow gasses to escape (thru valve cover), but w/ out the PCV valve in there, it also allows fresh air in, this is why there's a filter on the end of the hose. Not to filter the dirty gasses that are escaping into the atmosphere. Like a paper filter is gonna make that crap any better for the environment! good luck y'all!

All you have to do is plug the hole in your factory intake setup. Or go to an exhaust shop and have them do a custom pipe and you wont have to worry about plugging anything. The filter is to keep dirt and debris from entering the valve cover not to filter gasses. The k&n filter just allows as much air to go through as possible to the environment instead of keeping most of it inside.

so does that hurt the intake to get fresh air in (filtered)???? Is a fuel filter too small?

The way the factory setup is done is the air goes through the resonator to the filter box then through the intake tubing into the throttle body. The extra gasses after combustion occurs can linger inside the motor so they make a tube to go fromt he valve cover to the intake tube after the filter and back into the throttle body. The air was already filtered to start with and the gasses just get burned off during combustion again. Yes a fuel filter will be to small and not effective. They have other kinds of valve cover breathers other that K&N but the K&N is only $20. Thats o.k. for a couple of horses.
Thanks,
Kurt

So what is good to plug the hole in the intake tube, tape it off?

Either tape it off or go to a local prts srore or hardware store and find a rubber plug that will fit it. On all my other vehicles I just went to a exhaust shop and had them cut and bend pipes for me. Then paint them your chioce of colors and viola! You have a custom intake setup that is original and functional for $30. (For the pipe)
