OK I tried painting the nicks on my bumper (sanded down to metal, primed / painted / clear coated) but I just can't get it to look right. How hard would it be to paint my bumper some sort of lightly textured black, to lower the maintenance of my X.

i just painted all my trim pieces to include the bumpers used Dupli Color OEM Black Trip paint with the Dupli Color clear coat. Cleaned everything with mineral spirits and used a red 3M pad to scuff the area and clean again 3 coats of trim paint and 3 coats of clear and they turned our awsome. all my trim was a grey color i like the black better.

I'm probably going to try that. Should I take the bumper off or can I just mask off everything else?

i masked off everything else and had no problems what so ever just be sure that take time and mask everything off as best as you can so you dont get any of the trim paint on your X where you dont want it and keep the mineral spirits and rag close by incase this does happen and then you can just wipe it off.
