Can anyone explain in detail how the Shift Motor works in a 4WD Auto setup (96 Explorer Control Trac). For example.....when it actually works and when it doesn't.

I have been having a problem with my explorers 4WD Auto. It no longer engages as the vehicle is in motion (say 5-10MPH). But at a stop it engages fine. I had also gotten the classic 4WD Flashing Lights, but the mechanic couldn't pull any GEM codes. He tells me the GEM and RELAYS are fine because it can still engage 4x4. He blames the Shift Motor. What do you think?

I have looked around here and from most accounts the motor is real easy to clean----I just replaced mine and it was EXPENSIVE. Look around the boards and there is pictures here somewhere. Good Luck.

Check out Dead Link Removed . That's the link to how the shift motor functions, and how to fix it yourself.

I have a '96 Control Trac also. Shift into 4WD Auto is accomplished through a ball ramp and electromagnetic clutch. There is no mechanical shift into the transfer case and hence no action by the shift motor when going into 4WD Auto. The shift motor works only to shift into 4WD Low. So, if your X is able to properly engage and disengage 4WD Low, your shift motor is most probably OK.
I would suggest to check the Hall Sensors in the transfer case, front axle vacuum coupling system and may be recheck GEM and Torque On Demand Relay. Another possible culprit could be the electromagnetic clutch coil, but unless someone else here knows of a method to test it electrically from outside, the only way to inspect it is opening the transfer case.

I have information on the 4405 Control Trac transfer case (85% obtained in this wonderful site) and hopefully will be rebuilding mine soon. Should you need help, just let me know.

Best,

Luis
