.....during normal driving? I know I can see the gears using the paddles, or using manual shifting. Is there a way to see the gear during normal driving? Thanks, Ed

Perhaps with FORScan. Otherwise, no.

Hey Ed. I just found this using the 'Search' feature although I'm not quite sure what it means; 2020 FORSCAN Discussion

Thanks for the link. Does the XLT have the "tool tray" like the ST?

No. You can paddle up or down and see/feel/hear if a gear changed or not, so if you paddle up and see a 4, you were probably in 3.

But, honestly, why do you care?

I care because it would be nice to see how it's shifting from gear to gear, and to know what gears they are. The lower gears aren't quite seamless, and it would be nice to just see it. I'm not the only one who would like to be able to see the gears, others are asking the same thing.

I've also been wondering if there was some setting to see the gears, especially after I got the notice from Ford to bring it in for hesitation.

Having a graphical display and not offering this is pretty stupid, really. It literally would cost nothing.

Does Ford has a version of GMs diagnostic/engineering version on the display?

I drove my moms 2018 limited to the airport yesterday, although I love that explorer and all of its features I find the NO GEAR INDICATOR a real PITA
You look down at the console shifter and they printed letters on the side of the console but from the drivers seat it is hard to tell which on you are in. The problem comes when you drive multiple vehicles and they all have different shifters. I backed out of her garage, went to put it in D and could not tell if I went 2 nothces or three, so not wanting to be in 2 when driving around I wanted to see if I was in D or 2.....very hard to tell and no display. So I end up shifting back to P and then down to D....stupid to not have an indicator of some sort to show what position the shift lever is in!

Also it is a real PITA to get to the seat settings and reset the seat massage'rs after they shut off.....
I know I know there are worse things in the world, but since this thread exists I put in my 02 cents

Unless they changed it on the 2018, the position the shifter is in, PRNDS, is clearly displayed on the dash's instrument panel. It was on my Explorers and Lincolns as well. I believe it is at the bottom of the speedometer.
The complaint in this thread is that the actual gear that the transmission is in isn't displayed digitally in the instrument cluster. That is separate from the PRNDS display.

Or smart, as you avoid complaints about it "skipping a gear" or some other design intent feature when it is acting perfectly normal. Or perhaps the space on the IP was better used for something else? Regardless, if the transmission malfunctions enough to miss a gear that was intended, it will set a code. If you have a driveablity complaint, you are better off demonstrating it to the dealer, than describing it and having them go hunt for it anyway. I had this once on a Taurus. I said the engine made a noise. They said it didn't. I showed it to them. Then they bought me a new engine.

I was in a Jeep last week and it was the same thing. Gear only displays if you are in some sort of manual mode. Paddles, rocker switch etc.

There’s not really a space issue as you can have any number of displays and choose which visible.

It can be turned on with a tune so it is possible.
