I used gutter guards, go back to the gutter dept and you should find them in 5 or 6 sheet packs.

how did you cut them and how did you stick them on?

I used wire cutters to cut the mesh, it's a ***** and you have to snip it one at a time, but I used the included clips to clip it to the top and then wrapped it around the bottom part. It takes some playing around, but you'll get it.
