For all those who have read, I just wrecked my '98 XLT 5.0 AWD http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=195299

Well... I just bought another '98 XLT. I got it for $3,000. 130,000 miles, Leather, and sunroof option. It does have the SOHC V-6 and is 2WD, but whatever. For $3,000 I can't complain too much. It does need new carpet because the existing carpet is trashed. It looks like some kids spilt coffee on the back floorboard all over the floor. The front floor is pretty stained too. The back cargo area is okay because they had the mat down.

Should I get some carpet out of another explorer or should I buy it new? Thanks in advance.

I have had carpet problems too, since the previous owner seemed to have liked to throw empty pop cans all over....
I have tried alot, and gotten it better, but still not great. Have you tried stain removers? What ones?

No, because honestly I don't see that they will work... but I guess that it would be significantly cheaper than replacement of carpet... I think I will try some oxy clean this weekend... but if that does not work, I guess I have no alternative

I bought a "NIFTY" brand carpet. It wasn't too bad-but I did have to re stitch the plastic retainers for the rear seat flap thingy's, and I had to run an edge stitch along the curve on those flaps also. Just put the thread through every square in the backing and back around the edge, to the next square. I took a scrap of carpet to walmart and bought some needlepoint thread which matched it. It is a time consuming project-but not that bad really.
The rest was trim to fit. The whole thing took me a couple of days. I'm kind slow in tight quarters-it shouldn't take that long. I must also say it was the first auto carpet I did on my own-

Did it have instructions? I am not stupid... but I heard that the carpet needs to be warm when you lay it so that it forms to the floorboard... anything I should know before I start a project like this?? Thanks in advance.

this one was molded--kinda
You will need lots of sharp utility knife blades-get a couple of packs-
also find a large needle assortment-I used a needle nosed plier to push it through, then grab to pull it through- following the holes in the plastic from the pre-existing stitch.
I laid the old carpet on top of the new one, and used a non permanent sharpie marker to mark it 2" or so larger-then cut this out. It makes it easier to maneuver.

For the bolt holes-this is all by feel--

I think the hump padding needed adjustment-I had to remove a bit of it-

BTW
I replaced the whole carpet with a darker shade of grey-I'm hoping it will show the stains of normal wear a bit less

Thanks a million!!

what color do you need?

Its a molded one for a 4dr

Unfortunately I need gray...
