Not sure if this is the right thread.. but i need a new catalytic converter but instead of buying a whole new one my friends dad whos a mechanic said he would take it off and just take the honeycombs out. which would save me alot of money... would there be any negative effects if i choose to go that route?

One of the negative effects would be a $2,500 fine and spending a few weeks or years in prison for not having a working catalytic converter as required by federal law. Your friends' dad would also get to share in the fun to the tune of $25,000 and even more time in prison for being the agent who intentionally did such a thing.

One of the other negative effects would be the poisonous carbon monoxide you'd have coming out of the exhaust, that you'd wind up breathing anytime the vehicle is idling with the windows down, or that other people on the road next to you in traffic would be breathing. Of course, if you smoke, this might be a positive, you could just suck on the exhaust pipe with the vehicle running and it'd be like a giant cigarette.

Generally you're better off having a new replacement converter put in, either by buying a new pipe with the converter already on there, or buying an aftermarket converter and putting it in place of the stock converter.

You can also have the shop do some custom exhaust work while you're at it and get better performance while keeping it fully legal.

Unless it's an off-road only vehicle, federal law requires a working catalytic converter. There are yahoos who use straight pipes or fake converters to try and skirt the rules and they might get away with it for a little while, but the big ticket and the time is a wake up call when they do get it.

Don't try it, spend the money and replace the converter if that's what it needs. Buy a universal converter/converters online if you need to and have a shop install them if that costs less than buying them at a shop. Even if it costs a few hundred, it's cheaper than $2,500 and years of your life.

One should add that modern catalytic converters actually increase the efficiency of the engine. The catalyst burns off unburnt fuel, which heats the converter, and increases pressure as the exhaust moves downstream in the converter. This increases exhaust velocity as it enters your exhaust system, which in turn increases the effects of scavenging.

Furthermore, your truck with throw CELs for a catalyst inefficiency, and you will be doing a bunch of extra polluting, all because you didn't want to spend $100 on a cat to weld in, or $200 on a replacement pipe and converter. You said money isn't an issue, so don't make it an issue.

That only applies to certain areas then cuz ive been to 6 Ford Dealerships, selling 2013 Mustangs with a "Straight Pipe Option" straight piping is worse than running with a punched coverter, even more so when the Mustangs a v8.... Go to any classic car show, Guarantee you over half the cars there are running no converter. I simply asked what are the negative effects to a punched converter not a life story on consequences.

No way is there a Ford dealership removing Catalytic converters.

It does not depend on area at all. Anyone suggesting you remove your emission control devices in the U.S. is breaking the law.

Bottom line, you don't get the answer you want then whine. Go do what you want to do, but don't discuss illegal **** on this forum

Discussing on how to remove or to modify catalytic converters in such a way that it compromises the factory specs is strictly Taboo on this site. And anyone posting such modifications will have their post removed.
IMO this whole thread needs to be deleted.
And besides, some Government Drone could be flying over reading this and then what?... BOOM!
Or site blown to smithereens.
