What do you guys think about gutting the cat (well cats) on my 94 explorer? Will it increase my gas milage at all, how about power? The truck has 170k on the original cats and I think they may be cloged.

I have done that on my 1977 F-150 (crow bared it out) and I passed the state inspection.
My cat was so blocked that my F150 overheated. I didn't notice any power gain though except bringing it back to proper running.

Gutting the stock cats is a lame way of saving some dough on high-flow cats, at the expense of suffocating other motorists, and perhaps yourself or your passengers, depending how much you drive with the windows open. For a trail-only rig it's fine, but for a vehicle thats driven on public roads, gutting or removing cats is inconsiderate at best, and illegal at worst.

I say if you think they're clogged and/or just want new cats, get a bolt-on replacement from Walker/Dynomax. They make a nice high flow setup that bolts in just like stock. Get it at NAPA or Advance auto parts, or anywhere that sells Dynomax. Consider adding a cat-back system at the same time if you don't have one already to compliment it as well.

It will increase gas mileage and power by a ton if the stocker is even a little bit clogged. If not though, theres only going to be a bit of difference, since the stock cats flow pretty good.

__________
Suffocating other motorist because of a holed Cat???
Your kidding, right?
Using your logic everyone in the states here that do not have any polution inspections should be dead by now.
And everybody that lived thru the 40'-50's and 60' with no Cats should be dead too.
I guess thats it for me "I AM DEAD".

i took a 2in. pipe and ran down through the 2 cats on mine and it runs alot better ! i could tell right off that i had done it, good seat of the pant increase. and it sounds good with my flowmaster .

It's pretty tough to breathe in the exhaust fumes from a gasoline-powered vehicle with bypassed or removed cats without at least coughing or hacking, which I've done in traffic many times, about the same as if someone blew cigarette smoke right in my face, with some other toxic chemicals thrown in. I use the term "suffocating" since it sure feels like it. I'm just saying it's inconsiderate and illegal, not that anyone is going to drop dead from doing so. It sure would make it easier to kill someone with the exhaust fumes though, especially in a poorly ventilated area. :)

A cat does nothing to reduce the production of carbon monoxide, and that is what is going to kill you the fastest.

A properly tuned engine produces very few emissions... even with the absence of a cat. I have friends who drag race in states with emissions testing, one of them runs a 11 second big block Olds Cutlass (4200 pounds) and when he was put on the sniffer his car produced less than 20% of the allowable levels for a NEW car... and he has no cats.

Rockauto.com
They sell Walker cats cheaper then you can get almost anywhere else.

Dicount Converters sells Cats too but I don't know who make those...they look different then Walker
