I just put a rebuilt radiator on my 2000 mountaineer (v8) Long story short. It's still put. I have let it heat up and down twice so far. Both times topping off the radiator. I was hearing thumping sounds after I turned off the engine (and before) the first time. a friend suggested that was air. The 2nd time I walked away for 5 minutes and the temp gage was all the way to hot. I also noticed anitfreeze leaking and discovered that the overflow canister was overfull.
So do I need to bleed or do I have other problems. If bleeding is required how do I go about it? Thanks

Two common possiblies and one less do.

Bad thetmostat or bad fan clutch are both likely.

A bad water pump impeller is also on the list, particularly since the overheat occurs very quickly.

Thanks. I am going to try and get the air out. hoping someone has done that.

Replace the t-stat. If it's still blowing coolant in to the overflow bottle, it's probably a blown head gasket. I'm assuming it was overheating before you put the remanufactured radiator in?

Yes It was overheating before the radiator replacement. I don't think it is the thermostat because the upper hose gets warm. that means the thermostat is opening.

Did you replace the radiator cap? This is responsible for regulating the pressure inbthe cooling system. A bad cap allows too much coolant to flow into the overflow reservior. The engine overhests due to lacknof coolant in the engine when this happens.

Ok I followed that procedure(the link in my last post) for getting air out. While I was at it I did change the thermostat as well. However I am certain the old one was functioning because the upper radiator hose got hot and it emitted heat out of the heater.
Anyway. I ran it 20 minutes and then took it for a 15 minute ride. the temperature gauge remained dead center though the whole time. so I am going to call that a success!! thanks for all your input.
I highly recommend the procedure shown on the aforementioned link
