I own a 2003 Explorer 4dr xls V6 auto with I beleive the 3.27 rear end. Recently i got caught up on a ridge and my pssngr tire just spun while the drvr just chilled there. Can I add or do something to help this......a locker if possible? Can I swap diff to a 3.73 LS. What options do i have....and is it worth it. This is the first time i have had an issue. But i would like to maybe do light towing....and dont wanna get stuck on a boat ramp. please help...any comments or suggestions welcomed

Welcome to the site. A locker would definately help. If you wanted to swap differentials, you would have to change both the front & rear if your truck is 4WD/AWD. The best option would probably be a locker like a Powertrax or Aussie Locker from our sponsor.

Irs

The truck is 2 wd and has the IRS. so no solid axle. would a locker work on my diff? Can i do that or does it involve alot of special tools and know how?

Differntials are tricky. You will need a good amount of tools. I don't know what is out there for the 3rd gen, but you can defilently call around and get answers.

the irs is the exact same carrier as the other 8.8s, it even uses the same bearings( ive put them in my old mustang along with a set of 3.73s that had a slight whine) , ptting the locker in is easy compared to the removal and installation of the pumpkin it self.

Differential change

I too have been considering either a gear swap or changing the entire diff. to one with 3.73 gears. My '03 2wd currently has the 3.55 rear end. In the near future I'm buying a camper and the tow rating is only 3300# with the 3.55s. Just wanting to see if anyone has swapped the entire diff. The other alternative is trading it for one with the class III tow package. :) If anyone has any experience with this let me know......Thanks!

I've never installed a locker before - but I've installed LSDs and open diffs (normally found on vehicles) and I have set up a few rear ends. you will need a dial indicator, a caliper, and various sockets and punches/hammer.

To do the job RIGHT you need these tools - unless you have a great understand of it and feel for backlash.

You don't need the measurment instruments if you are just installing a lock-rite or Aussie Locker. Those lockers fit into your stock differential case. You only need the setup tools if you are replacing the entire carrier assmbly. The Lock-Rite and Aussie Lockers can be installed with basic hand tools.
