The transmission fluid on my 97 Exp with 5R55E auto box needs changing. It looks dirty and has a hint of a burnt smell and a 2nd to 3rd flare is starting.
Since I need to get as much of the fluid out as possible will it help to slightly loosen the VB retaining bolts.I'm aware that one will never get all the fluid out but every drop helps
I do not want to drop the VB unless absolutly necessary as I simply do not have the technical expertise to do a rebuild and here in South Africa spares are basically non existant and everything would have to be imported from the US.

I would not loosen the vb bolts unless you are planning on replacing the separator plate gasket (which is bonded in your case I believe). The gasket will likely tear. The 2-3 flare is a common issue. A search in the transmission section will give you repair threads.

If you haven't done it, you should adjust the bands. Again, look in the trans section for the thread. It is in the sticky area.

You can order a replacement vb from Central Valve Bodies and it will have all available improvements. Bolt in and go. Er, making sure you use a inch/lb torque wrench, proper sequence etc.

Thanks for the info.Just thought that loosening the VB bolts a little might get get some more fluid to drip out.
Have followed all the relevant threads carefully and must say they are very informative.Would probably still find much of the repair work too technical. Have however found a number of specialist gearbox repair shops here in Johannesburg who used to do a fair amount of gearbox repair work for Ford dealers back in the late 90's when 2nd Gen Explorers were sold in South Africa.

Look at the thread where you pump old fluid out and put new in, it is the best way to change fluid, requires about 12 Qts or more as the trans holds 10.
Do not loosen the VB bolts. Below is instructions on how to do.

If you are having flare problems you are going to have to open it up anyway. I wrecked a lot of MERC V telling myself fresh juice & a filter will take care of it. YMMV

Thanks for that.
In point 11,step 4 of the instructions am I correct in assuming the gear shift must be in Park while the engine is idling to activate the pumping process.
Also at what rate does the old fluid get pumped out.If slowly then fine because trying to fill new fluid through the dipstick hole is a time consuming exercise. Just concerned that damage could occur if one cannot get the new fluid into the gearbox quickly enough or can one switch the engine off now and then to catch up with filling .

The flare is currently hardly noticable but it's there.Am hoping the new fluid will cure it otherwise we will be in for a VB rebuild or more.My big problem is the scarcity of spares in South Africa and most of anything I might need needs to be imported from the US.

In answer to your question, it comes out rather slowly. Yes it has to be in park. You can do it by yourself also , when 3 quarts are pumped out, turn the engine off, add 3 qts to the trans, then start and again pump out 3 qts., continue till 12 qts have been added. Also if you change the filter, which I recommend, about 4 qts of fluid will drain out, get the pumping process ready, then add 4 qts of fluid and start the pumping process.
If you have a friend help use a funnel with as large of a hole in it as you can, the fluid will go in about as fast as it comes out.
