I changed my xfer case fluid(don't know when it was done last) and it definately improved 4X4 operation. It seems much smother and instantaneous now, just tried it in the snow. 4x4 low shift doesn't delay and hesitate anymore(I never used it because it had issues). The shift seems quieter. The stuff that came out was not pretty. I'm not saying it will fix everything but it certainly can't hurt and can prolong the life of that expensive unit.

You need 2 qts(1.5 used) of regular cheap name brand Mercon or a good synthetic(not Mercon V, Motorcraft has a special xfer case fluid(prolly old Mercon) and does not suggest V) and there is a great sticky thread on this page how to do it. It is easier than an oil change and you don't need a lift. I used Exxon Superflow Mercon. For $6 it is the best investment you can make to preserve your xfer case. The suggested interval is 60K miles, so you can adjust that to your driving habits.

Also, you can pat yourself on the back after because the local oil change places want $55- $70 to do this!
