My check engine light is on so I had the codes pulled at the ford garage and they gave me "P0171 and P1074 right and left bank lean". No real explanation of what this means just it's going to cost alot to fix it. What do these codes mean and can it be repaired for a resonable price? I have a 2000 mountaineer with 136,000 miles on it. 4.0 6cylinder engine.

...This will get you started...;)

A) Not the o2 sensors

1) Probably Vacuum leak
2) Clean the MAF
3) EGR tube leak
4) Plugs and wires

OR 5) Intake manifold gaskets..

Hopefully it will be something really easy and inexpensive. Something that's in common with both sides of the engine, very possible it's a vacuum leak somewhere. That would cause you to throw the same lean code for both cylinder banks. Check for a loose intake hose, something after the MAF, or a cracked or loose vacuum hose. Check your intake manifold bolts, upper and lower intake gaskets, etc...
