When I drive about 80 to 100 miles my chech engine light comes on and then it will go off for a few minutes and then come back on for a few minutes over and over again. This will continue until i stop and turn it off for a while. I notice a delay in shifting when it comes on. other than that it runs well. Does anyone know what sensor this could be. I replaced the tps recently, cleaned MAS also. Please help

this also happens to me as i go down the highway to and from school. its the o2 sensor most likely (at least it was for me. It prob. doesnt help that there is dried mud all around it either). might just pop it off and see if it needs cleaning or replacing

Welcome to this forum! The check engine light is a way for the computer to tell you that it has found a fault with either a sensor, connection, missing input from some where, or has a part out of specification causing your stoiciometry (mixture) to be thrown off. You have to get the code read. Since your system is EEC-IV (OBD-I), you will need to go to a place like Advance Auto Parts, since AutoZone only reads 96-up vehicles with OBD-II. thanks a lot for the info. If my light isn't on at the time of runnin the codes will they still store so I can find the problem because the light comes and goes.

On my 94 Explorer I have the same problem. It usually occurred when towing a trailer or under heavy load. When mine was newer and under warranty I had it checked - Dealer Mechanic basically admitted there is a problem with the sensitivity of this light on my particular year. Can also be due to a faulty seal on your gas cap. If it's accompanied with other symptoms though ("loss of power") it's worth checking out. I had an intake manifold leak that sent the fuel mixture way out of wack and almost burned up the motor - Hey - I got the check engine light though!

BrooklynBay-

Thats weird I got my 91 Explorer checked @ auto zone.

I have a 98 ohv-X explorer

Is there a way to read codes with out a code reader?? Thanks

Short answer, No, not on your 98.. its ODB-II but cheap scanners can be had for $30ish

btw.. this thread is in the 91-94 forum.. you have a 2nd generation X

Around here Auto Zone is a no go for OBD-I, however O'Reilly's had a OBD-II reader that has a OBD-I adaptor....but it wouldn't pull my codes. Didn't try Advanced Auto, it's right next to O'Reilly's, should have stopped it. But I just did the paper clip method and now I see no need for a code reader.....
