Hey all. I have a 1995 explorer with a check engine light on. I had it into the Ford dealership and they said they were unable to read the codes, sent me on my way with no info as to what the problem could be or even what to possibly check. It doesn't always come on right away sometimes it can take 5-10mins driving time before it'll come on. There doesn't seem to be any driving problem, no hesitations nothing and drives perfectly fine. I'm hoping somebody can shed some light on things to check or what the problem might possibly be.

Thanks

Disconnect the battery for 10 mins to reset the PCM. After the next cel buy an OBDII code reader and pull the codes yourself.

It's a '95. It's OBDI, that OBDII code reader won't do you much good.

IAC Possible Problem

I have a 1995 2dr 4x4 sport that has had the same problem every now and again. I had the local high school put it on their analyzer as I didn't have an ODBI reader. They gave me a code, but I can't remember the number, but andyway, it had to do with a dirty IAC. IAC is Idle Air Control. You can go to this link to see how to clean it. http://www.explorer4x4.com/iac.htm I have done this and it cleard the error for quite awhile. You also can follow mawrazen's instructions to clear the code by disconnecting the battery for 10 or so mintues.

Where I live, you can take your truck to an Autozone and they will let you use their code reader for the ODBI to download and clear the code.

Good luck.

Heh, mine has been on ever since 2004, No problems at all. All cars do the same.....

I cleaned the IAC and took the truck out on my lunch and the light didn't come on. I'm hoping it fixed the problem.
My next problem though is the ABS light is on too.

Check engine light came back on. It does take a few mins of driving though before it comes on.

Was the DPFE sensor I think the guy called it something to do with the EGR. Replaced that, problem solved.

DPFE is the EGR flow sensor

Sounds like you got it fixed! Its a common EGR problem with these trucks

If your CEL is on it 99% of th etime points so something wrong with an emissions component in the drivetrain. You should not just continue to drive it without checking the codes, it could be something serious (pay a little now or alot later)

95 is an odd year because it is OBD-I but has an OBD-II connector....

Everything at this point seems fine. Also seeing how this thread is already going. What should I do to raise the rear end up in my truck? so it's at least level with the front or I can crank the torsions up. DOn't wanna spend a pile or a bunch of labor time.

I'm not sure if I understand your question right. If you're thinking that the torsion bars will raise the rear, that's incorrect. The torsion bars are basically the springs for the front end. To raise the rear, the easiest and cheapest way is to install a set of aftermarket leaf spring shackles. I think the favorites around here are the ones from Warrior - part number WAR153. But there are other brands that may be a bit cheaper and will work too.

If I raise the rear and ended up being higher then the front I'd just crank the torsions is what I mean't. Thanks for the help btw

OK, now I see what you meant! Yes you certainly can do that. However, I think you'll only get 1" - 1.5" of lift from the shackles, so you might not even have to mess with the front.

I had the check engine light come on and used the OBDC tool to pull the codes and now the CEL is off. I did not do anything other than pul the codes. If the problem that prompted the light to go off in the first place is still present, should the light continue to illuminate or does the computer figure that you did something at the same time you pulled the code to solve the problem. In other words, if ll I did was gather the error codes, do I still have something that needs attention if the light is no longer on?

Thanks

Even after changing the DPFE sensor the light is still coming on. I'm really getting tired of these problems.

Three shops and myself included were unable to get a code.
