check Engine Light

Hi! I'm on a budget & female (not car savvy) What could make my 2003 Ford Explorer Sport's check engine light come on? All the gages are normal. When I first crank it, the engine sort of surges a little but it runs just fine. It has about 97,000 some odd miles on it. I take care of it and have regular oil changes. I just don't want to take it to the shop & get taken. Thank you!

Your best bet is to go to autozone and have the codes scanned -they will do this free of charge. Avoid buying any repair parts until you post the actual code here. Be sure to write it (or them) down.
