Ok I need some advice before noon tomorrow...

I have a 91 X and its currently in the shop getting a new motor and clutch. I have all new clutch parts except for the slave cylinder. The mechanic has the engine out and inspected the slave and said its not leaking, but wanted to know if I wanted to replace it anyway while he has it apart. The truck has about 100K miles and as far as I know everything is original.

I always believe in the theory that you shouldn't try to fix what isn't broken. Although I would essentially be getting free labor to have him replace it now while its apart. I have had prior issues including the truck not wanting to shift into first or rev when stopped. Also every once in a while it would really grind going into third or fourth. The clutch pedal has always felt fine though and the fluid was always good.

The mechanic told me that sometimes when you replace them they are more likely to go bad than the original.

What are you guys thoughts? I need to make a decision before tomorrow when he starts putting it back together

anytime you have the chance to change the slave cylinder in a Ranger, Explorer, or Bronco II, you should. The slave is the weakest part of the clutch system and are highly prone to failure. Spending $65 now is cheaper than having to pay to pull the trans again.

Yup, do it, along with a new pilot bearing.

Yup, do the slave, I know I wasn't happy the day after I had everything apart and had to drop the tranny again.

Yeah I got a new flywheel, pressure plate, clutch, pilot bearing, throwout bearing. The slave was the only thing we didn't get. I know from this forum how prone they are to going out, but I am fearful of replacing something that isn't broken. I got the slave from Autozone because the ford part was out of stock.

I think I will have him replace it

ABSOLUTELY have him replace it!!! With 100K on the clock, I'd hate to see the original fail shortly afterwards. I wouldn't think twice.

I have to vote replace as well.

I did opt to replace it

I should have my truck back today around noon :D

Ive never been so excited to drive my X before. Its been sitting in the driveway for 6 months now with a bad engine.
