I recently inherited my uncles 1998 Ford Explorer Sport (2 Wheel Drive) with 200k miles on it. I was down shifting through a hilly rural area when all of a sudden the clutch got stuck and the car wouldn't go into gear when i shifted. The engine revs fine when gas is applied and i can shift gears normally, but the car won't go forward or reverse. People have told me its the pressure plate or clutch. But I'm not sure. I know my uncle has gotten the clutched changed 3 times since he bought the car used in 2001. It was changed 2x by mechanics and once by him. I don't know when the last time the transmission fluid was changed, but it looks topped off.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

Thanks for any help.

When you buy a clutch kit, you get the pressure plate along with the clutch disc itself.
Some kits may also include a new pilot bearing as well.

There is always the chance the input shaft broke, but that should be easy to check with the tranny out.Always replace clutch and pressure plate together, might want to have the flywheel ground at the same time.:p:
