Sounds to me like the "throw out bearing"

If ya don`t know it is a bearing between the fork that pushes your clutch springs in and the springs themselves. It won`t cause any damage by squealing but it can be a pain in the butt. I suspect mine of doing that, but it only squeals when I let the clutch out, stopping when it warms up. I`m waiting till my clutch wears out before I take a look in there though. If you had work done recently they should replace that bearing everytime your tranny comes off.

Yep, sounds like a throwout bearing going. If it whines when the clutch is depressed, that's the most likely culprit. If it whines when the clutch is released, it's likely the input shaft bearings.

the input shaft bearings

Hey JDraper!

Can you elaborate? I was hoping it was the throwout bearing on mine that was causing the whine. Actually it is more like a squeal, when taking off in first gear only.

Are these bearings tough to do yourself? I plan on upgrading my clutch next summer and would hate to do it all to still hear that squeal.

THanks bud!

That's a major job to do. I cooked the main input shaft bearing on my '92 Sport's tranny, and it wiped the input shaft too. Complete rebuild required :(. The symptoms are a whine from the tranny when it's in either neutral and idling with the clutch out, or running down the highway in any gear. The whine disappears when you are sitting still and depress the clutch, so the sound pattern is kinda exactly opposite of what you would expect from a throwout bearing. If you only have a squeal or whine in one gear, I would suspect a worn or damaged gear, not an input shaft bearing.

Please lord, let it be nothing!

Well I don`t know, It seems to squeal only for a second as the truck takes off in first gear. Just as the clutch pedal leaves the "friction point". It goes away right after that point. It`ll do that untill it warms up.

I thought maybe the bearing or something to do with wearing out of the clutch plate, like possibly the plate is letting out a squeal before it fully grabs. Okay I was hoping it was one of the two, so that when I redo it it will be cured.
Now I`m scared!

If it stops making noise once you are fully released, it's most likely either the clutch plate worn out or the throwout bearing. If it were internal to the tranny, it wouldn't go away. I'd say it will probably disappear when you replace the clutch, pressure plate, and throwout bearing. Just make sure your flywheel is in good shape when you do the clutch. You should have it resurfaced when you have it apart, and replace the pressure plate. Nothing will wipe out a new clutch faster than a warped flywheel or pressure plate. Don't do the job half assed. It's much better to spend a little extra $$ at the time then to have to go back in a year later.

Thanks, that`s a relief!

I was either planning on resurfacing or getting a new flywheel. Total agreement on doing it "full-assed".
