My opinion, for what it is worth… small 5.5mm or 17/32 socket will work, but agree that it must be thin-walled socket. I very CAREFULLY used a drill bit to slightly enlarge the plastic opening, so that my sockets fit. It is possible that different types of fasteners were used here.

Don’t know why Ford made this a little difficult.

Its a 5.5 mm
A thin wall socket works
I used a nut driver handle and bit

That is the odd 5.5mm sized bolt, there are a few in the truck which require that odd 5.5mm socket.

The gear indicator tiny bolt is also that size, the one that mounts the fragile plastic part to the column. I only had one larger socket set which included that 5.5mm size, I try to keep that one in one place in my tool box. If you don't have one handy, it is a pain to find or buy one.

forgot about the gear indicator. I beleive the standar assortment available at HF still has the stepdown/taper 5.5mm
