ECM code 214 - Camshaft sensor

I have read through old threads and have done my research on ECM code 214. My check engine light is intermittent. It has come on and off a few times in the past several weeks. Today is the first time I noticed a jump when I press the gas. Has anyone tried to replace the CAMshaft sensor? Where is it and is it much work? Any help would be much appreciated, I'm not prepared to throw $700 at a dealership - *******s! :P

it is on the front of the engine pass side at the bottom it sits just back of the pullys. as for cost i do not know

i think the63duck is referring you to the CRANKSHAFT sensor not the camshaft sensor?

Ya, I think he is too. I need to know where the Camshaft sensor is and if it's an easy replacement.

i dont know. i really hate to say it, but i know when too.. look into a book is what i would do :))))

Its in the very back of the engine basically under the upper intake manifold.

Does anyone have photos of these parts and their locations? (I might not know one if it came over and bit me!)

Thanks;

The OHV engine only has a crankshaft sensor, not a cam sensor.

Not true. The CA emmisions equiped OHV's had both. The crankshaft sensor is on the front and points at the harmonic balancer. The cam postion sensor is on the back of the engine where the ditributor would normally be. THey are not hard to replace but do require a little flexibility as it is a tight fit between the firewall and the upper intake. Easiest way is to unbolt the tranny from the crossmember and jack it up to rock the motor forward to provide more room.

In 93 the CA equiped started being sold everywhere. They have SEFI (sequental) where as the non CA one were MEFI (multiport). They were not exclusively sold in CA either as I bought a used one in PA that was sold new there. Anyhow, by 94 they were pretty much all CA emissions equiped.

You take that sensor off ( just the cup part, not the entire shaft assembly), clean it out good, check the electrical connector-wiring, and Ill bet a donut it'll be fixed.
That is a hall effect sensor, they rarely go intermittent unless dirty- or poor electrical supply.
Usually, these need replacement due to bearing failure in the drive (noise), which is a common problem on the v-8s, but the sensor itself usually still works.

Also, a weak battery or one going south gives me the cmp code in my v-8 mounty ,
another long shot

I have heard of a strange ac voltage leak from alternator causing a CMP (camshaft posotion sensor) fault
Disconnect the battery,
clean it with some electrical contact cleaner, worth a shot.

I am sure there is a way to tell, probably a letter in the VIN or something, but to be honest I really am not sure. If it has an EGR sytem and a camshaft position sensor it is most likely a SEFI. The only true way to tell is to look at the wires goin to the fuel injectors. If they are all different colrs, it is SEFI, if there are any fuel injectors that have the same color wires, it is MEFI. Of course all the injectors have two wires so they will all have one wire that is the same color.

That is correct. I wasn't sure if that explanation would confuse you or make it perfectly clear.

I have a 1994 Explorer and also the sales brochure I think more or less came with the truck. It says that the induction system is "Multi-Port electronic fuel injection with EEC-IV computer."

Which type is that?

It;s hard to tell as Ford simply left it called the same thing. Probably to make owners manuals and the such easier. I had no idea until I swaped frames and tried to use a 91 computer on my 93. Needless to say, I was missing on a few cylinders. The other way to tell is to look at the wiring diagrams found in a Chiltons book, see what pins go from the PCM to the fuel injectors and see if those wires are present on the wiring harness at the PCM. I ended up having to change the entire computer wiring harness to get my motor to run right and also use my 93 PCM. PITA!!!
