Has anyone installed a Cold Air Intake on a Late model 4.6L?? Just bought a '04 with a 4.6L and wonder if moisture into the filter has ever been a problem. It looks like its insulated pretty well behind the headlight and it would certainly help on power/gas milege, but wondered if anyone has had one installed for awhile and what problems there are.

Thanks

I have a K&N FIPK2 installed on my '02 4.0. I've had it for a few months now and no problems with water/moisture that I know of. I would think the intakes on the 4.6 wouldn't either as the location is similar.

Here's a tip for you. I haven't heard of too many problems with this - but some people "lather up" on the filter oil and what ends up happening is the oil is pulled through and gets stuck on the MAFS device. Inturn - making the vehicle run rough, crappy, blah blah. Anyway, Just give the filter a light coating of oil, nothing crazy, and you should be okay. And no, moisture should not be a problem.

TTT for this old thread as I need for some info. I know there has to be other kits out there other than the MAC and the K&N, If anyone has any input or reccomendations please post. I am in need of a CAI kit.

I just recieved and installed a KKM intake on my 01 Explorer Sport 4.0 SOHC. It sounds AWESOME around 2700-3000 RPM, no whine or whistle except when I first start it up in the morning. Also MUCH more economical than a K&N CAI kit. If someone wants to spend an extra ~200.00 to have the name K&N under the hood that is their business. But, performance wise I can assure you a K&N model doesnt increase performance enough to warrant that extra 200.00. Spend it on something else like a new throttle body or a better exhaust.

Abraxsis, you say that you save an extra $200 bucks, I can get the K&N kit for around $200. so maybe I can see $75 but you are just getting a filter/plate like I see in the KKM kit you speak of. The K&N provides a plastic elbow that replaces the stock rubber one, which I am sure it helps smooth out airflow, a heatsheild and filter with provisions for plug and play for the MAF sensor and vacumm hoses. What I am saying is, I dont think you are just paying for a name, there is obvious R&R time (dyno etc.) that is put into it and you get a balanced kit, I have looked at the MAC setup which has a nice bling bling factor but i am sure it draws heat. I have had camaros, mustangs, super coupes and recently bid farewell to a 2003 ford Lightning which all I modded heavily. There seemed to be more performace parts to choose from. I havnt found to many kits out there for late model explorers. I may very well just get the K&N kit and be done with it. Again just IMO

Well I am basing my pricing off my brother's K/N setup which was 270.00. As for the looks, of course it looks better, people wouldn't pay the money they do if it looked like crap. If you have a larger throttle body, then by all means you should have a pipe. But what people don't understand is the basic physics of it all. There is a finite amount of air that can flow through the throttle body at any given time, the rubber pipe combined with the S&B filter (which has tested greater air flow than K/N filters) provides more than enough air to see significant power gains. As for the small eddies that my rubber pipe provides may reduce the HP increase by 1/4 HP ... acceptable loss to save all that cash. As for a "balanced" kit, it is a filter and a hose, there is no testing to it. More air = good, slap on a filter, make sure the pipe is bent properly, sell. Pretty much happens in that order. A Dyno only gives you numbers to market with in this particular case.

With a name brand, you are ALWAYS paying for a name. I work in the toy industry, where plush teddy bears literally cost 50 cents to make ... anyone remember the last time Walmart was selling 50 cent teddy bears? When you buy from K&N you pay marketing fee, salaries, promotional items, etc. etc. Bet the actual product is less than 20.00 to make. Now dont get me wrong, you pay for those things when you buy KKM as well, they just dont charge as much.

Lastly, a KKM setup with an eBay heat sheild will run 115-150 depending on your application, and I would be willing to bet money that on two identical vehicles (one with KKM and one with K and N) the dyno difference would be +/- .5 HP

You mean I am paying over inflated prices for my kids toys :D

You have good points. To each his own. Take care

guys.. u have any pointers for a CAI for my 03 V6 Explorer? thanks

dont buy from jegs.... i spent the $200+ for the 77 series K&N and its been over a week an still no product in hand....

 I've got a KKM installed in my 03 Mounty for about a year now and have had no problems with heat or moisture. Don't know if I gained much as far as mpg but my V8 definatelly breathes easier. Never really thought about the K&N set-up...

Has anyone used or heard anything about the AEM Brute Force CAI? Jegs finally called and offered an alternative intake that would fit my 02 sport but I know K&N's are good I just havnt heard much about AEM other than instantly thinking ricers/imports.
