I have access to a k&n cold air intake for the 4.6, which are no longer manufactured. Asking price is $100+ whatever shipping. The whole system has 2-3,000 miles on it, so I'm hesitant. Is really all that wears the cone filter? Or is the system toast at this point? Thanks in advance for any replies

IMO 2-3,000 miles is nothing especially if you are still able to get a replacement filter.

^ exactly. Any open air filter is going to actually draw in warm air from the engine compartment. Not to mention the oiled filters are well known to contaminate the maf sensor. Save the money for maintenance.

+3. Wish the K&N 63-2573 dyno graph was still there. Regardless, any HP gains with that intake occurs over 3000 RPM. IMO, use a quality drop in panel for your factory CAI such as the AFE 31-10074 Pro Dry-S that needs no oil. $$$, but exceptional build quality. Most K&N kits should be referred to as an "open air" intakes unless the filter is contained in an air box and sucking outside air.

Any suggestions for filter that is under $50? I always thought k&n was the go-to company for filters but after reading up on it clearly I was wrong but $77 just seems steep for a filter or maybe i am just cheap.

Is Spectre or AEM any good?

AEM DryFlow appears comparable to the AFE Pro Dry-S. Unfortunately, the 28-20106 shows specific to 4.0L Sports and ST's with a different air box. My past experience with Spectre products has NEVER been good. Chrome plated plastic crap that's typically found in cheap department stores. I'd like to see Spectre's air filtration specs compared to "reputable" brands. If anything, if you need a replacement panel filter, just buy a Motorcraft or national brand name. As always, you get what you pay for. If someone designed a 100% efficient air filter, your engine oil would stay clean much, much longer.

I just made an offer, if it ends up being a knockoff ill deal with the return process with ebay. Ill let you know how it goes

Got the filter for $40 shipped!

Congrats, you STOLE it. When you pick up this filter you'll find it about four times weight of the stock panel. Don't be surprised at the tight fit when installing, very good seal. In case the instructions are missing I found some info in the aFe site for you. Enjoy!

How often do I need to clean my filter?

You should clean the filter around the 25K - 30K mile mark under normal conditions. In extreme dusty or dirty environments, you should check more frequently. Over cleaning the filter will shorten the life of the filter and reduce its filtration efficiency. Accumulating some dirt actually helps the filtration.
