cold air intake

for my stock 1994 explorer i would like a cold air intake for it but i went to JCWhitney and they have like 30 different ones i dont which one to get. any suggestions and are they easy to install?

As long as your not going offroad. You have to be careful of the cold air intake, as it could be easier to ingest water into your intake depending on the style. K&N filter would be a good start.... Clean throttle bodie and MAF

For a "cold air intake" most of us just run a cone air filter instead of the box. They sell adapter plates that connec to the MAF, so you just bolt off the boxy air filter, bolt on teh adapter, then bolt the cone filter to that. K&N are okay filters, but watch out, if you over oil them the oil will get all over the MAF messing up the readings, not enough oil won't give you enough flow.

The only "real" difference is maybe a 1-2mpg gain, if that, if anything, but the most significant improvement is the sound when you put the pedal to the floor, Sounds a lot more throatier and mean.

You can pick up the adapter/cone at your local auto store most times. Good Luck.

This is on a 1998 Ranger, but you can do the same thing. I kept my stock box, added a K&N drop-in and made my own tubing. It really howls when I push on the gas. I can tell a different in MPG already as well. While I was doing this I cleaned my MAF and reset the system by unplugging the negative battery terminal.

Not sure if it classifies as an "oil" persay, but whatever you spray on the filter to help with flow, can get onto the MAF if over done. But you'll find people who can do it perfectly and haven't had a problem, I myself just don't want to take the chance on a 15 year old 266k mile engine.

I know Aldive runs an Amsoil air filter, and highly recommends them. Just remember the motto you get what you pay for and you should be fine. There are better filters then K&N on the market, just have to look past the hype.

i really like it. its an alternative to kn, and its bolt in, except for removing the old air box and drilling one hole.

its not complicated u just have to clean the filter with some soap and water let it dry and buy some spray oil for it. very easy job. Instalation is very easy too u just undo ur stock tube and airbox, reuse ur old MAF and it bolts right in where ur old gromits were for the stock air box. simple as pie lol a 12 year old could do it. As for which one id say K&N would be ur best bet.

Nope, it sits lower than the stock one. The only problem I had was it was rubbing on the pulley, so I dinged it with a rounded hammer a bit to make a little more clearance. You can't see the ding when looking at it since it is on the bottom side. Some guys can get theirs to sit on the radiator and they still aren't too tall to close the hood.

yeah I wish I would have done it in black. Oh well maybe the next one. Take some pictures while you do your build. I have never done this on a first generation X but plan on doing it soon. I would like to see how yours turns out.
