here is the page that lists you cam in the compcams catalog...

http://www.compcams.com/catalog/144_145.html

they dont list a spring, which makes me think they dont make any for that application. which means use the stockers (maybe?)

Cant use stock

Dont use the stock springs with the bigger cam, I put new stock springs in with the 410 and if I were to do it again I think Id use some aftermarket.

Ive got the info someplace for some Crane springs, but you can get the springs anywhere. Off the top of my head you want seat pressure of around 110-115lbs and 275 or 280lbs open. I dont remember the installed height , or diameter, but the info you want is in Svens book. I can look it up later if you want.

Doug904 sells everyhting you need, and set up on a head for really decent prices compared to what I could do local. Check with him for the springs.

Comp Cams knows little to nothing about the cams for the 4.0 BTW.

Good Luck

Finally got in touch with Compcams today...they said the only spring they sell that fits the 4.0 ohv is the 988-12, and that I'd have to get spring retainers for it from Crane...part 99947-12. Maybe I'll go with Crane springs too.

I do see a 988 dual spring in the Compcams online catalog, but Steve, I guess I might have to ask you to look up the good info in Sven's book when you get a spare moment.

Especially since they don't know anything about the 4.0 ;)

I checked my "file"( a bunch of hand scribbled notes on greasy wrinkled paper:D) and those are the part numbers I have. I think they came from Svens web site - Comp cams 988 for springs and crane retainers 99947. Did CC give you the specs on the springs? 110 or so on the seat and 275 open they would be good I think.

I his book he gives Crane springs 99858 outer and 99834 inner, and 99947 retainers.

Im not sure whether the retainers will work with the stock valves though. I have a note that says they wont. But I wrote "locks" next to it so Im not sure if its just a case of new locks or if the valve stem is the wrong size. Sorry. I dont have a Crane or CC catalog with the specs for the parts, but it should be easy to determine.

You have had much better luck with Comp Cams than I had.- I got hold of three people none of which could get me any spring data for the cam, or even springs for the heads!! Glad to know htey have some knowledge of what they have.

Hope thats helps some.

Took a look at the CC web site the 988s look good, 1.6 inch installed and 1 inch bind gives .60 lift capability (your cam is .50 lift or so.)

Just the question about the valve keepers)locks) and the valve stems. Maybe Doug can help out if you can reach him.

Good Luck

Thanks for the research and info, Steve! Glad to see I spoke to a somewhat knowledgeable person at Compcams. About the retainers....check out this page on the Crane cams website....looks promising. Scroll down the page and you'll see the 99947-12 retainers used in the 4.0l engine setup.

http://www.cranecams.com/master/apps/amc.htm

Seems straightforward but then this is pretty new territory for me....take a look when you get a chance.

Thanks again!

From http://www.cranecams.com/master/vsretain.htm

the 99947 retainers look to fit the Comp cams springs fine, But the valve stem and lock combination is the question now. I dont know why I made the note about the locks, my guess is that either the stock locks dont work with the retainers, or the retainers require locks that wont work with the stock valves.
I dont have the info about what taper is on the stock locks and how many grooves the stock valve has.

Are you getting new heads, or rebuilding the ones you have?

Ok, have them checked carefully for cracks.

Im looking for any info I can find on the valve stem/lock situation.

It looks like Crane doesnt make the springs I listed earlier- may be the reason I had the Comp Cams number with the Crane retainers.

steve- my past experiences with CompCams has allways been good. they seem to know their stuff and getting good tech over the phone has been easy. however, it appears they know nothing of the 4 liter grinds. i wonder if maybe back in the day Sven had them cut the two 4 liter cams and then list them in their catalog. this would explain their severe lack of info on the two cams... idunno... just thinking aloud i guess.

James

I think once you get away from the "standard" small block Ford and Chevy , Big Block Chevy the service gets weaker- and for good reason, those are the most popular. Ive called CC on a few things (Ford 4.0, AMC v-8s ) in the past and the answers have been hit or miss, and usually not more than they have in the public documentation.

Just my experience - but I do think you are correct about the 4.0 cams and the Sven relationship.

Thats right Steve, Comp cams springs coupled with Crane cams retainers and your good to go. The reason for the two companies is that Comp doesn't have a retainer that will work with the dual springs for the stock valve locks. Now if you went with aftermarket single lock valves then you could get a retainer from Comp to work. But why spend $28 a valve just to use the same companys retainers?

Don't forget when you have them installed in your heads that theheads will need to be machined toallow the springs to sit in the stock spring perches.

Later Doug904.

Thanks Doug

Hoped you would come along and straighten me out :D

So Comp Cams 988 springs, with Crane Cams 99947 retainers, stock valves and stock locks is the set up.

Doug, installed height on the Comp Cams springs? 1.6??"
Going back to Svens book he called for 1.635" with a .030 shim included.

Misc info:

Stock spring specs (from 91 FSM) - stock springs are 60-65lbs on the seat@ 1.58", and 138-149lbs open at 1.22"

assembled height stock is 1.578-1.609"
