I've searched but can't find an exact answer.

I am soon to have an upgraded exhaust and I was wondering with this plus an open cone filter, would the results be better in performance? I've been hearing the cone filter is bound to suck in more HOT air than a box and not worth it. But then I've heard good about the cone filter.
If I get one, I plan on just buying the filter and taking out my box, and putting it on the stock tubing.
Is it still work it to put on the stock tubing?

well it depends, if you get an intake kit with a cone filter enclosed in a box, like volant, your performance will improve and it wont suck the extra hot air due to open exposure of engine heat. im sure there's a way to rig up a cone to the stock intake tubing but i'd strongly suggest investing in a kit.

Hmm, checked it out and I am liking it. Maybe I'll make a custom box around just a cone. I can't afford that Volant haha.

Anyway I just went to an exhaust shop and they said 85 an hour and it should be no more than an hour. Dude was pretty nice too. He can do it on Wednesday. And I guess it's illegal down here to have a dumped muffler 'cause he said he can't dump it. But he did say it was a bunch or horse poo to not be able to dump it around here haha. So I agreed with him that it will just exit the rear. Don't know if i want it to exit the side of the rear or just straight back.

cone filter

hey i bought a bomz cone filter and adapter on ebay for like 20 bucks shipped to canada. i left the bottom part of the air box so its still drawing in cold air from the front of the truck. Sounds awesome and feels like a little bit more power gain!

This is something I might have to try = )

And I'm thinking of just asking the guy to clamp the outlet of the muffler. That was I can just have it dumped

Take off the tailpipe at home that is.

Get an Amsoil Ea filter. High quality and no need to oil them. I followed the manufacturers recommended cleaning method just the other day:

(1) Remove filter.
(2) Clean filter using Shop-Vac from the outside (so you don't suck dirt into the filter).
(3) Reinstall.

Ten minute exercise, tops. Try that with a cloth/oil filter.

The "hot vs cold air" argument has been raging for years on this and other sites. I'm of the opinion that no intake kit works better than the other when it comes down to it. I'm also of the opinion that air temps using all kits are identical at speed. I';ve used both MAC and Volant and noticed no difference in performance. Only differences are appearance, sound (Volant just sounded different) and of course....cost. Volants carry a hefty price tag while MAC is a superb buy.

Oh yeah, I do have a Volant kit. I think it's the best only because the box keeps the filter cleaner and drier than setups without. It also looks great.

I just popped on a K&N cone filter on the end of the stock tube (with an adapter) and just like 91explo I left the bottom of the stock air box in place. Sounds good, and made a HUGE difference in gas mileage! I'm getting like, an extra 35 or so km per tank of gas.. You guys that use miles will have to do the conversion.. How many miles equal 35 kilometers..?

All i did was buy a Kand N and used short screws and screw it to the maf housing, it didnt penetrate the filter and it holds well once i get more time (school just started) im gonna build a box and buy either an adapter or kit, or, build my own out of PVC pipe! What do you think is a good diameter, 3-4 inch?

check on ebay I got a complete kit with filter and tube for $65 and it works great. If you want just the K&N filter replacement for the stock box I have one and would love to get it out of my garage.. Was on less than 1000 km.

There is a noticeable difference in throttle response and a big gain in top end acceleration. I need to fab a heat shield and figure out a way to channel air from the lower air dam. A cheap alternative to big names like K&N and Volant. Just thought id throw in my 2 cents.
