ok, got a couple of questions. First off, is there a way to take the control trac 4wd on a '95 and make it so it is true 4wd, it is kind of ok in the snow, but I would rather the real stuff for off roading. My other question is what is involved in a tune up these days, it doesn't seem like much can be done on an electronic ignition and timing and et cetera. Please tell me if you can, thanks.

not sure what you're talking about as far as "true" 4 wheel drive. If your switch is on 'auto' that means you're (basicaly) in 2 wheel drive until a wheel slips, then the front engages until you have adequete traction. this is ok for snow or dirt/gravel roads. actually, you can leave it in 'auto' all the time unless you specificaly want real 2 wheel drive. '97 and up with control trac didn't even come with 2 wheel drive - just auto/hi/low.
'4hi' and '4low' operate like "real" high and low range 4 wheel drive and stay on as long as the switch is in that position.

as far as tune ups, there are a few things you can do. a shop manual (haynes, chiltons, etc) is the best resource for this and other repair/maintenance issues.

in 95-96 ford used a different control trac..this used 2wd auto4x4 and 4x4low..and no there's no way i know of to get ture 4x4 with it..but mine has somthing wrong with it anf now the t-case it fully locked when i put it in 4x4 so im good..lol

as for a tune up..all you can do with these new moter's in plug's,wires,filter's..ect

if you are going to do some wheeling just drop it down into 4low, you will be good to go. or if you really want a true 4hi you can get a bw 1354m t-case out of a first gen and put it in. you will have to cut the floor up to put a shifter in. many people have done it. search around if you are interested

I work for a Ford dealer and a major tune-up includes: plugs, pcv valve, fuel filter and air filter. I begin recommending plug wires at 60k. While performing the tune I usually perform EEC quick tests to see if any dtc's are in memory. I also strongly recommend using Motorcraft parts. I used to use aftermarket components on my vehicles to save money but have found on customers and my own vehicles that they are not nearly the quality of the factory.

"if you really want a true 4hi you can get a bw 1354m t-case out of a first gen and put it in."..can't you just use the push buttom from a first gen also?..he has a 95 limited..im shure he don't want to cut his pretty limited

the elec first gens used a seprate computer taht you would have to get also and i dont know how succesful that would be. i dont know if anyone has done it either.

yeah, i want the true 4wd, not the control trac, engage after your already slipping ****. But I didn't want to do a really big project. I was hoping there was a so called "brown wire" to cut much like i hear can be done to make a later model have 2wd. As for the pcv valve, what are the benefits of replacing it?

yeah, my bad...i was under the impression that 95/96 had 2wd/auto/4hi/4low ...which would be ideal

it does seem like since the transfer case is capable of 4hi (via the auto mode) that it would be possible to wire it up so it gives that same signal constantly instead of just under certain conditions. but this would be something for someone who knows transfer cases better than me...

Since all that stuff is electronic

and computer controled anyway. You might talk to Brian at Apten Chips (wwwapten-us.com) he might be able to burn you a chip that can do that. It never hurts to ask. You might just tell him that in stead of auto 4x4 high you want auto, 4x4high, and 4x4 low like the new ones. He might, and then again he might not be able to but, it never hurts to ask.
