Coolant loss/temp gauge issues

I took the X to a different shop Friday. It turns out it is the RADIATOR that is bad. When driving, it had been spraying backwards making me think that the leak was farther back. Soo, my question now is, I need a new one. Does it matter what one I choose? I have a 5 speed with a/c stock, so am not sure if there is one specific to this or not?

Yes there is a 5 speed specific radiator. It doesn't have auto transmission cooler fittings built in. Mention that you have a/c. When I last bought one in 2011 mine cost about 150 dollars.
 






I checked both autozone and Oreilly and neither one seems to have a manual transmission with a/c radiator? The autozone one for a manual did not specifiy whether or not it had the a/c hookup. Guess I will have to call them or go in and ask.
 






I looked those two stores local to me, and autozone was cheaper by ten dollars. It is also a ship to home item or special order in store. I didn't see where it specified manual with a/c either. I only recall that question when I ordered mine years ago.

Has a warranty. I can't find a huge difference in one with a/c. It looks like the only difference is 5 speed or not. The automatics have a built in trans cooler.
 






Well, the coolant leak is back. It wasnt just the radiator. It is leaking again where I saw it before. How can I tell if it is the water pump going bad? Will it leak or will it just quit working? Temp gauge doesnt get overheated.
I am beginning to think the original diagnosis of an intake manifold gasket might be what's wrong. So help me if that's what it is....very expensive fix.
 






Oh come one, doesn't anyone read threads anymore?

I am going to replace the thermostat and housing, but there are two different sizes on the autozone.com website. One is 35mm the other is 40mm. Which one is it?
 






I cleaned off the thermostat housing. It is NOT the thermostat gasket.

I need a diagram for the intake manifold to confirm.
 








I am afraid the intake gasket is leaking. I need a diagram to confirm.
 












Nevermind, I found a diagram. It's the top of the lower intake manifold gasket that is leaking.

Does anyone know how hard this project would be for one person? Or is it advisable to just save money and have it done by a shop????
 






Been following this thread for awhile now. At this point, before you go and assume that it's an intake/head gasket which it might very well be, I'd make a small investment in the leak "dye" that was mentioned in one of the previous posts. This should identify any and all leaks that you may have which from looking at the pictures you provided, all the cooling system components look like they are past their prime.

Options:
1. Replace all cooling components including upper, lower, and heater core hoses. Replace thermostat and gasket. Then GET DYE to test.

2. Find and fix the current leak and address other cooling issues as they arise. Then GET DYE to test.

Either option requires DYE.

As to your question about how hard it is to do an intake gasket, that depends on your experience and patience. It doesn't really require any special tools or knowledge. A typical "shade tree" mechanic can accomplish it in about 8 hours or less using the basic assortment of tools like sockets, wrenches, screwdrivers and my favorite, a cool beverage. There are a number of components that have to be gently removed so as not to damage other components. Search this site and you will find a number of threads with pictures on how to do this. My guess is that you'll get charged at least $300.00 for a job that requires only about $20.00 in parts.

As to your question about water pumps, typical water pump failure is the pump bearing. Over time the bearing wears out and you can get a small leak out a weep hole near the bottom of the pump. When the bearing is really bad, you can feel and see the play in the fan by wiggling the fan and it will make a "metal scraping on metal" sound. The other component that wears out is the impeller inside the pump. The blades become worn and don't push as much water as they should and that usually causes a rise in coolant temperature resulting in an overheat condition.

Having said all this, GET THAT DYE!!

Yeah, this rig I bought back in January. The gal I bought it from had inherited it from a relative who passed away. She was in the process of having stuff fixed when she bought another vehicle and sold this to me. She said the clutch and transmission had been replaced, but that was pretty much the extent of anything original being replaced as far as I know. I do not know the history of the X.

The ONLY leak that I am dealing with right now, is the one that I am believing is the lower intake manifold. I fixed the leaking radiator.
I replaced the radiator and both coolant hoses. Those needed it bad. I know the heater core hoses need replaced.
When I turn the fan by hand, it doesn't move freely. Is that a bad sign? I have a new fan and fan clutch to replace.
The water pump is not making any sounds, nor is it weeping out the weep hole.
Would it just be advisable to replace the water pump and thermostat while I do the heater core hoses? I would hate to have to do this alllll over again in a few months if that water pump decides to go. I know some people would say, don't fix it if it isn't broken. But, to me, it would just save me time and more money later on in doing it all at once???

I was doing some research on the intake manifolds and replacing them, I am not that experienced. I do not want to mess something up. I would rather save the money and pay a good mechanic to do it. Too much on top to deal with, this is my only vehicle and so I need it done right the first time....
 
















I am really upset now. The leak is alot worse than I thought. It looks like it's coming from two different places! The last pic was taken, 5 minutes of idle and that much coolant was leaking....
 






HELP!!! THE LEAK IS REALLY BAD!!! Within the span of 3 minutes, and not enough time for the temp to get up to operating temp, I have puddles underneath the engine.

Is there anyway that I can see if this is a head gasket?!

Nevermind, I took it to a 3rd shop, they also are saying the intake manifold. So, off to get it fixed this coming Wednesday.
 






I have a similar leak in a similar spot. I took off my upper intake and checked my lower intake bolts they were all tight. So I look a little harder, mine turns out to be the upper radiator hose that is rubbing a spot on the oil fill portion of the valve cover.

In the next week or so I will replace the hose.

My radiator hoses are brand new and not the source of the leak. At leaat you were able to find your leak without too much trouble.
