Greetings...

I travel mainly highway miles on month long trips up and down the east coast (FL to Maine)... sometimes in the hot summer as well as the brutal New England winters.

What could I do to prevent and cooling system issues that arise with age/miles. I flushed the system @ 30,000. Every maintenance appointment the tech says all the hoses and belts are ok.

Is is possible and/or out of the ordinary to request that the hoses be switched out as a precaution? If so, what hoses are the ones worth changing to prevent a future problem. After 5 years in the sun/heat & freezing cold, something has got to give !!! I just don't want to find out the hard way.

Also, I get a faint smell of antifreeze from the engine area (near overflow tank) when the car is running.
- no visible leaks
- no loss of coolant
- no over heating
- no interior smell/wetness (even with heat heater on)

....and then I found this new TSB (TSB 09-11-12) that addresses coolant expansion tank leaks - 4.0 engine - 2006-2007 Explorers.

I'm guessing this may be the problem.

I'm taking it in for service soon and want to know based on experience, what type of preventative maintenance to the Cooling System I could do to prevent breaking down on the road... after all the SUV is five years old, but runs like a charm! I am willing to spend a few bucks to replace parts that are going to give in eventually.

Please help

Sounds like you're doin' good. Just keep doing what you're doing.

I change mine every 50k on all our cars even though the manuals say 100k. It's not just the coolant wearing out, it can develop electrolysis from flowing around dissimilar metals. IMO 30k is too often but you won't hurt anything by doing it. Belts and hoses are good for 100k but don't forget there are heater hoses too and not just the radiator hoses.

Man i wish I could say after all this SUV is 5 years old.
