CoryL '91 4 Door Getting some Goodies!!! Complete off-road performance modifications.

Actually Rick, the vent/return hose for the filler neck is INSIDE the main filler hose. One of those lovely space saving jobbies.

As for my progress.

SEVERELY HALTED for today.

Tranny is filled, oil is changed, power steering seems ok.

BUT, now when I get it running, white smoke comes pouring out. So that means I am burning water/coolant.

How, I have no clue. I haven't touched this motor AT ALL.

Soooooooooo......I get to have more fun before I can back it out.

It's killing me because its sitting on the rims, all ready to go and I can't do jack!

Here it is....on rims....

And here are the pics of how I did my intake.

Some 3" exhause tubing and some rubber couplers. Used two MAS housings bolted to each other with the one furthest from the filter actually plugged in.

I'm not throwing any codes either!

I wonder if the smoke is just from condensation building up in the cylinders from sitting so long. Should I just run it and let it go and smok eout the neighborhood?

White smoke could also be tranny fluid. Check your vacum modulator (if it has one). The diaphram could be bad and it's sucking tranny fluid through the vacum line.

If that's not it, use a radiator pressure tester to check for a blown head gasket or something along those lines. Autozone rents them out.

Cory what do you think of the gas tank location? Too low where you want clearance or just say WTF and go for it...

I say it is probably from sitting. Take her for a spin around the block. If it was fine b4 then it is probably just from sitting.

CoryL, I am with trckmagik run it. If you are burning coolant the worse than can happen you will make the inside of the cyl. really clean. Might just be from sitting and another reason that way if you do have to tear it down you might find another bug while driving it and can solve that problem too. Just my two cents.

Something for Rick. You might want to look into a fuel cell. I know they make all kinds and I am sure them make one you would like. I am not sure of the cost of one, but if you are unable to find one that might work. Some thing else that I thought of. Try to take a look at a s-10 gas tank. I know they are small like the Jeep ones but fit up and in the frame.

Rick, have you thought about gently 'caving in' the sections that rub on crossmembers? Maybe you could get it up a few more inches with losing too much capacity. :) Then you couldn't return it though.:(

I got the tranny rebuilt, so I doubt it is that.

I'll look into it though.

As for the tank, Rick, if I were you I would consider cutting out some of the rear floor and raising the tank up and then using sheetmtal to tub around it. You could then integrate some kind of storage system and benefit both ways.

What about the two crossmembers Cory? The tank is about 4" or more away from the floor, it's the crossmembers that are keeping it from going any higher.

Crossmembers can be made to be removeable.

Set up a temporary crossmember infront of the crossmember that the shocks mount to.

The bumper will serve as a temporary crossmember for the rear-most factory crossmember.

Then cut out the floorboard and get the tank where you want it. Make new lines, fab the sheetmetal around it (make sure you can get to the pump, etc), create storage, etc.

Then make two new tubular crossmembers that sit under the tank in the same locations as the stock ones, add a skidplate to it via tabs and bolts. Then reposition the shocks and be done!

Now that sound like a plan :D The rear suspension is going to be redone anyway. That's the reason for relocating the tank in the first place.

We have had vehicles set around for 3-6 months before we start them up and I don't remember any smoking white before. We have had lots of them smoke because they were on there tops but that is different.
Thought this might help.

Damn Rick what happened with the pumpkin and that tree? he he

any possibility you just spilled some coolant or other fluids somewhere they shouldn't be on accident while working?

you must have dropped some of your crack on the engine!!! lol

It was water at first.

Then today it was burning oil.

Then it stopped doing that and was starting to run halfway decent.

Then I decided to cycle through the gears.

Went to put it back in Park. Had some grindage and then A LOT of smoke coming out of the exhaust.

So I wonder if you are correct Rick and its getting tranny fluid through the vaccuum and burning it.

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

sound possible... when i rolled my truck it billowed white smoke out of it..... 3 days later when i came back to get it, it no longer billowed the white smoke.... probably atf that got sucked in when it was upside down....

cory, is the second mas in case the first one gets clogged up on the trail? then you could just unplug one and plug in the other and be ready to go ;)

The MAS is setup that way mainly beacuse it was cheaper than buying an adapter. A used MAS in a junkyard is pretty cheap.

If I got one with the right calibration code I could use it as a backup.

The MAS closest to the filter is the non functional one.

Just pull the vacuum line and see if any fluid drips out. Put a vaccum pump on the modulator to test that.
