cost for painting just the hood?

What about in the average body shop today? Do they usually use HVLP, or an airless system? I would think that it's probably HVLP.

What was the paint like on the old cars from the 40's-70's. I know that they didn't have a lot of chemicals that are used today, but in the pictures of them, you don't see blotches of paint like the cars from the 80's, and 90's. I know that the old enamels that they used on sinks, bathtubs, refrigerators, and stoves were really durable, since I see this stuff all day (I do electrical, plumbing work, and appliance repair). Some of them look almost like new even though they might be about 60 years old or more.

The older paints chalked really bad after 5 or 6 years.....(enamels) the lquers looked better new but didn't last as well either. Remember a sink never sees UV rays. A car lives it's life under UV.

They get scratched, and there is basically nothing that could be done about it (not that I'm aware of), since it is already made to be that color from the factory without any painting. I know somebody that has a Saturn, and he said that he has a lifetime warranty from the company everytime he wants to have it washed. If he goes through a regular car wash, the brushes will scuff it up. The dealer hand washes it for him every month.

Actually most of the plastic pannels ( called claddings ) come unpainted. If they are non textured they are quite repairable and paintable.

Saturn s are the same way. Pannels come un painted and then we shoot them to match.

If the Saturns could be painted, why does the dealer say that they get scuffed in a car wash? I wonder why the dealer would give a lifetime warranty on free car washes/waxes for them?

You give me 20k and I pay some kid minium wage to wash it every few months.

if the shop is good, they will wet sand and buff, it's part of the process.... if they dont do, dont goto them...

The hood would need to be washed well, and degreased then scuffed with probably 800-1000 grit . Any rock chips need filling? Oh and...black ain't JUST black..... and you MAY have minor appearance deficits... but if your paint is good will be ok. They will run thru a minor amount of paint (5-8 oz of color and maybe 7-10 oz of clear depending on the number of coats. The color they may have to order. (FORD uses about 4 different "black" colors... or used to). Clear they ought to have in quantity if they paint a lot of cars.

prep? Maybe 1 hour to 1.5. Painting, (mixing shooting cleanup) 1 to 1.5 hours. materials... maybe $100 to 150. Will they flatsand and buff it? I will assume not. $75 shop rate my guess will come in between $300 to 500. Be curious to see what Monmix comes up with. Bet is close to a range between $350 to 425. Flatsanding and buffing the clear might add $75 to 100 to the price.

(I know.. hard to imagine black isn't just BLACK. It ain't.)

Actually the new 3M stuff (and others are following suit) for final finish sanding (used to be called color sanding) is done dry... and works really well... the dry sanding leaves a dust that lets you clearly see where you have been.. with a DA sander it goes quickly (I tend to use 3200 grit).. the buffing takes more time than the sanding.
