It is worth it to make your own box or to buy one. Pics will help

it really depends on how much $ your putting into the rest of the system, what size and the # of subs your using, and what kind of tools you have available.

my box broke cuz I droped it and I wanted to get a new one or make one. I priced ones out for my 10" and it was like $80. I wanted to know what it would cost to make one. I have an infinity 1000watt 10" sub and a 700 watt soundstorm amp and a 200 watt amp for the doors

you could build a box for that amp from-

-1 sheet of 3/4" mdf $20 at home depot
-liquid nails $5 at home depot
-a one lb box of screws $2.50 at home depot
-two yards of carpet from home depot $15

thats about $40 and if dont right it would sound better than a prefab box.

i agree with drew i just built a duel 15 box and it was less then the pre fab u are looking at

not only is it usually, cheaper, better, but its custom, meaning, make it to fit exactly where u want, so it takes up the amount of space u want,

making it look a lot better, when all finished, i currently have 2 10's in a bandpass thats huge takes up more space then it needs to, prefab,

personally i think a custom box truly does make it "custom fit" for you, and could be cheaper in alot of ways, though it is time consuming. like drew said, having the tools readily available is really a key.

building my custom dual 12s box was awesome, i think you'll like it better anyways.

DIY > Storebought every time, imho.

Storebought boxes look generic and tacky.

Prefab perhaps, but you don't need to make your own to have a custom box. The shop that installed my setup built all my stuff.

If you don't have the skills/tools to build your own see if a local shop around you does custom enclosures.

That's more along the lines of what I meant. You can tell the difference between a Prefab Circuit City generic box and a box made with a little TLC.

It's just a matter of knowing the airspace really, and remembering back to geometry class to figure out how to get the inside diameter minus the mass of the cone/magnet, etc. :)

but if someone builds you a custom box that seems to get very pricey.

Build this. It won't break if dropped, plus it will sound MUCH better than store bought crap. Line the inside w/ sound dampening.

You can make any shape you need, then add on to make it cosmetically fit the vehicle in places like the rear wheel well.

$40 I could buy one from a store. Is it hard to make? What is mdf? Wood?

MDF = Medium Density Fiberboard. Basically wood - most every lumber/hardware store usually has them.

For $40 you could buy a box.
For another $50 you could have someone install your deck for you.
For $50 more you can have someone install your speakers.
For another $20, you can have someone get you a CD and put it in the deck for you. Hell, they might even push play.

Or you can save money, do it yourself, have fun with a cool project and learn a bit about car audio and your truck at the same time. And know that when you show someone "Hey, check out my stereo", it means that it's a modification that you did on your own - not that you swiped your Visa at Best Buy.

I think it's pressed saw dust isn't it?

Personally I'd rather have someone else do it. Alternately you could also find someone to help you install it, or watch them do it. The shop that did mine doesn't charge much for labour. The bigger outlets would probably rape you. He was as excited as I was because he hadn't done a brahma before. :)

How are you suppose to get the wiring into the box? I'm planning on building my own too....can I just drill a small hole or what?

Yes it's essentially pressed saw dust. Good **** for certain projects but I wouldn't go off and try and build everything out of it like those crappy home shows (i.e. Trading Spaces, Surprise by Design)

ur obviously going to want to wire up the speakers before you close the box. u can buy the wire cups that fit into the back of most boxes you buy, at the hardware store as well, only like a buck or so. so wire the cup with the sub, that way, once the box is built, u can transfer it in and out, easily

Terminal cups, available at a lot of places, radioshack for instance has good ones....

Im not a big fan of terminal cups I would just run the wire through two little holes and get it directly to the amp. Seal the holes and you have a good connection. The more you split the wires the more signal loss/power loss you have so keep it together and benefit...that is my two cents...and 25 cents for that matter too...(im goin broke on this one :)) Build it yourself and even if you wind up buying the materials twice cause you mess up you can't put a value on the learning experience....seriously...no joke....
