Could my glasspack muffler be what is causing my X to diesel (run backwards) after I shut it off?

I took it to the Ford dealer and they want to charge me $660 for a tune up that they say they have to do before they can know exactly what the problem is. They also told me that I had a bad coil but if I had a bad coil, I don't think the thing would even run.

Please help. This has been going on for too long and this is the 3rd place I've taken it.

Other than making it sound like an angry lawnmower (IMO) it doesn't have anything really to do with the dieseling.

in your case, I'd check for leaking injectors, and also do a coolant flush, you got some hot spots and getting enough gas into the cylender to have it run (just like a diesel) you might also have a lot of carbon in the combustion chamber. Run a couple cans of a good injector cleaner and see what happens, also take it out of OD and put it in 3 or D and give it a good 50 mile trip on the highway to blow out any carbon. Do that and then see if it still does it.

I'd be taking it somewhere besides that Ford dealer!! $660 for a tune up????????? What are they gonna do, replace half the engine?? That's nuts!!. I'd go somewhere else!!

As for the coil pack, it could be bad. It might have something to do with your dieseling too.

ok well forget the glasspack, my boss at work told me that her rodeo did the exact same thing and that it turned out to be her fuel pump. she got it replaced and it worked fine from then on.

the thing is though, whenever they hook mine up to the computer, it won't do anything wrong for a good 2 weeks afterwards.

could it be the fuel pump?>

I seriousley doubt it has anything to do with the fuel pump. I agree with Texan01, on the carbon build up/ leaking injector. I'd start with running some injector cleaner and (like he said) run it a good distance in direct drive at 55+ mph.

Ok, I'll try doing that.

Could this be stemmed from the same problem? Now when I let my X sit for about 8 hours it doesn't want to start. Could that be from an injector also or carbon build up? I've already run some injector cleaner in there. I'll probably have to replace whatever injector(s) it is but how do I know which one it is? None of the mechanics will tell me.

The no-start condition could be caused by an injector leaking down and the fuel pump is having to pump up the pressure. Next time it sits for a long time, turn the key to on (not start) and leave it for a few seconds, then crank it, if it starts right up you got either a bad check-valve (if it's like the GM systmes it's in the pump motor) or a leaking injector.

The only way to really find a bad injector is to pull the plugs and look for one with lots of black fluffy looking deposits on it, that's carbon. or to pull the fuel rail out with the injectors still attached and then pressurize it to see which one drips.

I'd take it elsewhere and see if you can find a shop that'll work with you without taking your money.
