courtesy light comes on while driving

I have a stock 97 XLT. Randomly, the light at the driver's feet comes on while driving. Of course, I can only notice this at night.
Sometimes it happens just when I brake. Other times, just as I am cruising. Sometimes it stays on for the duration of the trip, other times it goes off almost instantly.

Any ideas where to start?

Check to make sure all doors are shut tight? Maybe a bad door/hatch switch?

well, I am pretty sure the doors are all closed tightly...but I will check the door switches.

Do any other lamps come on, or just that one? If it's just that one then I'd just check the wiring to that single lamp.
