cruise control problem

on a 99 mercury mountaineer i was changing my rear wiper motor and the next day my cruise control didnt work. wtf right. so i was browsing the forum and came across a self dignostic and it enters the mode but when i go and puch the on button nothing. so my question is, is there a way to see if i can fix it or do i have to get a new on off pad to make it work again, and yes i had the recall done for it as well. thanks in advanced for letting me pick your mind

does your horn also work? if not, there is a 10 amp fuse under the hood that might be blown

Well now it makes sense I was messing with the relays and found that I had a bad one so I just put it in the horn one, which no longer works. I'll see if I can get one and give it a shot. Thank you sir

Keep in mind that the fuse Tim is talking about isn't a relay, it's a yellow maxi fuse in the power distribution box also under the hood...

Joe, is it a maxi or blade? I know I had a 10 amp blade fuse blow on me causing both cruise and horn not to work.

Same thing- Maxi is just a larger blade fuse...

Sorry guys finally had some time to get a new relay and now it works. As for the fuse I checked them all and they were good but I did find I had a bad relay for my rear wiper so I left the horn open. Now that I have all the relays again my cruise works. Thanks for the guidance

the cruise on my 1995 Sport has stopped working. I replaced the brake master cylinder switch and checked the fuses (2 of them) in the fuse box to the left of the dash but still no joy. I looked at the relays in the power dist box, but the manual does not list any of them as being related to cruise. What am i missing here? Could the steering wheel switches be faulty? Any help or suggestions would be great. Thanks!

The cruise is tied in with the horn circuit as stated above there is a maxi fuse and a relay in the under Hood fuse block.

Cruise control module?

The fuses are fine and the relay seems to work, so now i'm thinking its the cruise control module which is located on the fender wall. Does this part typically fail? Looks to be an electro-mechanical sort of device

Cruise control

I'm planning to troubleshoot my non-working cruise control this weekend. In summary, light on dash comes on, but the car will not maintain any speed. I've checked fuses and replaced the brake switch on the master cylinder, all to no avail. If anyone has faced this problem and fixed it, I would love to hear from them. Does the cruise module (attached to the inner fender, pass side) often fail?

They're not known to fail, or at least not a high-failure rate part. They do, however, so it could absolutely be that. If the buttons do not have a nice "click" when pushing, they could be bad.

Cruise control module

i tried swapping out the cc module with one from a 1998 Mountainer - unit looked identical. I swapped it by removing the cable from the unit and attaching it to the Mountainer one. No luck - could not even get the light on the dash to come oin.

Back to the drawaing board on this one..

No nothing. I swapped back to the my original unit and the CC light now goes on, but the C still does not work.

Make sure that all cables are connected if the light is on it should be working. While driving my cruise was working than stopped all of a sudden. What happened was the cable popped off the throttle body. I put it back on and its works

Cruise control problem now solved. After trying two different second hand cc modules and not having either of them appear to work, I reached down and checked the switch attached to the clutch pedal lever. Low and behold, the black plastic switch piece was not pushed fully home on the clutch actuating rod. After a few seconds of fiddling, it was properly pushed home. Cruise now works fine. Hoorray! Now that 850 mile road trip will be easier to do.
