First, hello.

I have a 1998 EB AWD 5.0. The cruise control is not working. I have tried jumpering the disengage switch, vacuum leaks (none found), and checking back thru the steering wheel switches.

I ran across this thread:

http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=120158&highlight=cruise+control

It is mention that there is a diag. mode that can be entered. It will enter the daig, but none of the buttons when pushed light up the "Speed Control" indicator on the dash. Specifically the first one your are suppose to push (the "on").

Anyone have any ideas as to what that indicates? Or some checks that I can perform that I am missing? The troubleshooting tree doesn't say anything about that symptom or a possible fix.

Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the site.. Few questions, does the wipers or turn signals work? If not I suspect your multi-function switch or stalk has gone bad. Its very common on 2nd generation Explorers.

Thanks for the fast reply.

Everything works minus the cruise, I know the "off" button works because it does enter the diagnostics mode. The "Speed control" light does come on as it enters the Diag mode but fails to light after the other switches are pressed.

I'm fairly certain the CC on this gen is electrically operated, not vacuum. Anyway, I discovered on my '97 5.0 that the disengagement switch on the front of the master brake cylinder (under the hood) was faulty. That is, when I tried to turn on the CC, the brake diseng. sw was shorted to the "off" position, therefore not allowing the CC to engage when I depressed the "set" button. I pulled the sw and cleaned the contacts and now it works sorta ok, sometimes not engaging...but if I just keep jamming the "set" sw, it'll eventually come on. I could buy a new sw ($30), but for now I'm happy.
