ok, this might be really stupid, but i was thinkin about building my own muffler. the reason i want to do this, is i want the throaty, deeper sound of a flowmaster, but i dont want to make the exhaust any quieter. i was thinkin (and sometimes that can be dangerours) the reason flowmaster has a deeper sound is because it uses no fibergalss, and basically is a bunch of open chambers. what if i were to take some sheet metal about 18 inches long, shape it like a flowmaster, then weld some ends onto it, along with an inlet and outlet, and use that for a muffler? i think it would work, becasue it would be like one big open chamber, that shouldnt muffler the sound very much at all, and give me a loud throaty sound. anybody think it will work, or have i just been out in the sun too long  ?

A quality muffler costs a lot more than that.

not if you buy it off of ebay.....

my flowmaster when i got it a few years ago was only $60

I don't really know.. doesn't the 50 series have 3 chambers and 40 have 2? I had a 50 and now have a 40, the 40 is much deeper and louder than the 50. I'm thinking you would want less chambers.

probably not worth the time

I doubt it would be worth your time- mufflers- flow masters are cheap. Plus they have engineered the chamber to extract some power, and get a certain tone.
That said, if you have some time, access to a brake, a welder and some sheet metal let us know how it turns out.

Have Fun.
