dear friends,
My 2013 4wd explorer started developing noise on the cv joints. Only 20K miles on it. I heard that many other have the same problem.
I am very surprised to see this kind of problem on a car that was never abused or used on a bad road.
I would appreciate if anyone can tell me if this is a common failure on the 5th gen.

Welcome to the Forum fordexecu2013.:wavey:
This is a very rare failure. I think perhaps only 2 or 3 posts reported CV joint replacements. In quite a few cases where it was thought to be a CV joint, it turned out to be something else. Check out the following threads;

A vehicle doesn't have to be abused or driven over rough terrain to have this failure. Unfortunately parts do fail and that is why we have warranties. Take it to your dealer and let them check it out.

I'm having a flapping/clicking sound from the front passenger axle/CV area when starting from a stop. Is this similar to what you have with your rig?

I had a similar sound at about 3400 miles. The noise ended up being a faulty shock which was replaced after about 1 to 2 weeks and 2 extensive diagnostic visits.
Both the dealer and myself were perplexed due to the car being so new but they were willing to work with Ford to figure it out.

Your problem might be a different issue but maybe the information on this thread might shed some light into the problem.
Look at the post info here -> Rattle from front right wheel area - not A Pillar

Still fairly certain that it's not a CV joint. It just sounds "different". I always notice it the worst when arriving or leaving my work parking garage. Perhaps there's an echo off the concrete whenever I go around the turns in the garage. That's where I notice it most, and you don't hear it until you turn the steering wheels at least 1/2 turn. The frequency of the tick is 1 tick per tire revolution. You'd swear the sound was a rock or a metallic object in the tire, but I just cannot find one. It has to be something else.

This morning, while sitting in my parking spot i turned the wheels left and right and couldn't reproduce the tick. I also don't hear it when going STRAIGHT.

I've scheduled a service appointment on Monday. The car has 7900 miles on it and it's a lease, so it will be covered.
