Thanks for the update Darin, I'm glad you did figure it out. It's hard to diagnose a lot of the noises we read about on forums. The history of the vehicle helps the most. I expect you will know the condition of that truck better than us or the next person who works on it. Keep it running, it's still worth much more than you've spent on it.
thanks Don!
I'm kind of glad I went ahead and did it, I think the curiosity of not knowing exactly what it was would've finally got me in the end... I don't really know the history of it, but there's alot of holes in the cargo area, along with a few mounting bolts that looked to be some kind of rack mounts. there's also some scuffing in the paint just below the window lines all the way down the sides. I've seen a couple extra wires in the headlight housings, so it may have seen some kind of fire fighter or other emergency services action in it's life. I bought it from a friend, who bought it a couple years ago and had the trans rebuilt, but never really drove it very much in the short time he had it...there's no remote entry, but has what looks to be a heavier suspension than that I've seen on other explorers (factory or aftermarket, I can't tell), and a towing package. I'd like to set it up for light offroading, with a small winch/bullybar setup, and maybe the locker in the front.
