cv noise?

Thanks for the update Darin, I'm glad you did figure it out. It's hard to diagnose a lot of the noises we read about on forums. The history of the vehicle helps the most. I expect you will know the condition of that truck better than us or the next person who works on it. Keep it running, it's still worth much more than you've spent on it.

thanks Don!
I'm kind of glad I went ahead and did it, I think the curiosity of not knowing exactly what it was would've finally got me in the end... I don't really know the history of it, but there's alot of holes in the cargo area, along with a few mounting bolts that looked to be some kind of rack mounts. there's also some scuffing in the paint just below the window lines all the way down the sides. I've seen a couple extra wires in the headlight housings, so it may have seen some kind of fire fighter or other emergency services action in it's life. I bought it from a friend, who bought it a couple years ago and had the trans rebuilt, but never really drove it very much in the short time he had it...there's no remote entry, but has what looks to be a heavier suspension than that I've seen on other explorers (factory or aftermarket, I can't tell), and a towing package. I'd like to set it up for light offroading, with a small winch/bullybar setup, and maybe the locker in the front.

What people do with their vehicles is interesting, that's a puzzle to figure out with each new one you buy. I removed several wires going to the back, and an antenna base on the rear hatch(that makes the hatch not shut well(one hinge is a bit loose)). The smell I got from a rain jacket I had stored under the rear carpet flaps told me they had dogs. I've got some cleaning to do when I can remove the interior.

Check out your front suspension arms, and body mounts. Those are some hard parts that are getting very old if not changed recently. I just eyed another set of CA's for this truck, I've got some creaking that is either the body mounts, or the CA bushings. Keep at it.
