I need to replace my ball joints before the front wheels fall off. It would seem that I need to know if it is a Dana28 or Dana35 axle in order to get the right ones. I assume the 28/35 refers to the number of splines on the front axles? Is there a way to determine without ripping the front end apart? It doesn't seem to be listed on the door tag. Thank you in advance for any assistance.

...All first gen explorer's (91-94) are Dana 35...;)

yeah besides the fact that all explorers are dana 35s to tell the difference like on rangers, the dana 35 has ten bolts on the front dif and the dana 28 has 12 bolts on the front diff

Thank you for the info. You would think that the parts web sites would know that a 93 Explorer 4X4 has a Dana 35 then, and not list ball joints for the 28. But I guess that would make too much sense.

...If you click the "How to" in my signature, there is a link for ball joint replacement...It has 3 good threads but the third one is probably the best...;)
