Where you first owner or 2nd owner? I bought an explorer as a 2nd owner, and the vehicle had a clean title. I took it to an auto body shop, and the car been in accident. The previous owner did a good job repairing the vehicle, but even a millimeter off can cause other parts not to fit quickly or create noises.

Try adjusting you AC while its "popping". I've had several Fords that have had the Blend Door actuators go out and it starts with a popping noise caused by the actuator trying to move the door repeatedly. If adjusting the AC seems to have an effect on the noise, then that may be the issue.
