hi guys, new to the forum, been looking on here for a while and finally signed up.

so i like to go mudding with my sport trac almost every weekend, we usually find some pretty deep water holes... my question is, is there any breather lines or hoses that can be routed higher on my truck to be less likely that water goes into it? i havent had any problems so far but i would like to be safe :)

any input is appreciated, this forum seems to be full of great people!

There should be breathers for both axles, t-case, tranny.. Look under your truck and you should be able to find them.

You should check the fluid in those parts of the drive train. Replace them if they are contaminated with water. Then extend the breather lines. Front axle, transmission and transfer cas can be extended and routed up into the engine compartment. Rear axle vent can be extended and routed up to the gas fill vent.

Most important, the air intake is behind the passenger headlight. This is a weak link. It should be modified. Water in the intake will hydrolock and destroy your engine. You should learn what to do if you flood and hydrolock the engine. It does not have to be terminal, but if you do not know what you are doing ic can be.

Tell us more about this if you would.

On the 2nd gens, the intake is basically right behind the headlight on the passenger side. Of course going thru deep water, don't go flying in at like 25 MPH unless you like seeing your water in your engine.. Also don't listen to people when they say its not deep, you can ask SurrealNJ about that one.. lol

Back in the 90's before I had a 4x4, I went on a camping trip with guys from work that had 4x4 trucks. Me and my kids were riding with a guy from work in his brand new Dodge Dakota 4x4. Less than a week old. The first river crossing was probably the hardest. He went to fast and water went way up in the engine compartment. Yep, hydro locked the engine. The big mistake was to try and start the engine after it stopped while we were in the river. We should have sat there until someone could pull the truck out. The engine can compress the air/gas mixture, but not water. He restarted the engine and drove out of the river. That engine was ruined. We had to have it towed back to Phoenix.

So, he should not have tried to start it. Get towed out to the river side. Pull all of the spark plugs. Then turn over the engine to squirt out any water in the cylinders/intake. Then replace the spark plugs.

Contaminated differential oil will look milky white and I think smells like chocolate. Change it before you ruin the bearings and gears. :D

thx guys, i never go in anything that will reach my intake but was more concerned about the breathers. i'm getting a detroit locker installed in my rear end next week, they will have to change my fluid for that right?

and to what john said, yes your right about getting towed out b4 u start the engine, my friends 4runner got burried last weekend and we had to remove the plugs after i winched him out, i couldnt believe the water that came out! hah

thx again everyone, i need to take some pics of my x for yall

Thanks for the info John.

Also, inspect the air filter. When the intake sucks water, it will destroly the air filter. If you hydrolock, you will need to change the engine oil right away as well.
